Just a question. I really plan on buying a Thumb 4 of some sort in a year or two, what do you think would be smarter.. a new Thumb Bolt-on or a used Neck thru from ebay or bass central. Both would cost similiarly, the Neckthru likely being a little more unless i got one on ebay for around $1100 (which does happen).

I wish there was a straighforward answer for you. Personally I have found the neck-through to be a little warmer and having a little more sustain, but this question is bound to provoke a little debate based on past threads.

They are quite different. The Bolt-on has an Ovangkol body and the NT has a Bubinga body. My money would be on the NT because I love Bubinga. I've played both and they sound great. The NT should have more sustain than the bolt-on.

Both of them have a lot to offer. I sure wouldn't toss either one out of my guitar rack.

Do you need a special back to play a Thumb? Alot of people here who are selling their thumbs seem to be having problems with their back? I know about the neckdive, but in what way does it gets to your back/shoulder?

For me it's the weight of the Ovankol combined with the reach to the first position. I can play the Thumb Bass all day long sitting down but standing up is uncomfortable. My Fender style basses don't cause the shoulder/neck pain I experience with the Thumb.

Maybe I'm just a wuss...

I'll say my neck muscles are sore as hell the next day after playing, but it's not that big a deal. I've gotten used to neck dive. But if you own one an elastic type strap is invaluable.

Little bit but not as badly as thumb but it doesn't bother me when I'm playing my 'vette.
Balance between upper and lower horn is better in Corvette and body is bigger than in Thumb.
