I do not have a great picture of the Koa he has offered me yet becasue he has not done the final cut and book-matched it, but it has a really unique birdseye pattern in the middle of a somewhat light-blondish area surrounded by gorgeously grained, dark Koa. As soon as I have a decent picture I will post it...

Here is an example of the Koa sample...folks, the Koa or the Walnut, what do YOU think? The Koa sample would be book-matched. Also, see earlier in the post for the Walnut...thanks for the input (in advance)!

Tough call. I'd call the walnut more of a "gallery" piece, but how often do you see bird's eye koa? I'd lean a tad more towards the walnut, but that koa might be stunning when book matched.

Your answer is EXACTLY where I am at at the moment. Rob said he will send another photo of the Koa once cut and book-matched. I will post that when I get it (another couple of weeks). Thanks!

What can I say? Great minds drink alike. :smug: Another variable with the koa to throw in is to check out orientations on which way you'd want it facing. Koa and walnut can both exhibit interesting figuring patterns, but the various shades and hues of the wood can really add to it, especially when you add the symmetry after bookmatching. Subsequently, I was planning on ordering some sort of Rob Allen bass with a crazy walnut top later, which is probably next.

Can some one tell me what the pull-up volume knob actually does ... is there a description somewhere ?

I was told when I bought mine (2nd hand) that it boosted bass and mids, and it certainly sounds something like that, but I wondered if there was a more accurate description ?

Thanks, Andy

I'd have to dig up my "manual" which came with the Deep 4, but it gives it more of a wooly sound. I remember having the convo with Rob as he was designing it. He abandoned that stacked pot somewhere along the way.

Just got an email from Rob today. Looks like pictures of the cut koa is still a couple more weeks away. The wait is killing me! ;)

I think he might be working on mine. You can blame me for that one. ;)

Sam, remind me of the spec on that one. Does it have a piezo in addition to the two mags ?

Andy

Yes. A few years later, I kinda discovered that the piezo can cover the tone from the mags roughly 95% if I had to quantify it. The main difference is that there's not as much finger noise, which I'm kinda seeing as an advangate to the piezo.
