so i have had my mouse custom for a month or so now, and i simply cant get enough!
i told rob how happy i was with it, especially how it sounds recorded, and he told me to both DI record and mic it with a condenser! he said it adds an "airy" sound, and the mic should be placed over the neck heel, just like an acoustic guitar. makes sense, anyone tried it with their bass? any recordings?

here is a question i would appreciate everyone answering:
in what setting and style of music do you use your rob allen in?

in the past month or so of having my bass, i have played in folk settings (violins, percussion, guitars and vocals), jazz settings (drums and guitar) and, most exciting for me, avant garde settings (drums and guitar).

more and more i find the bass adding a great depth to my playing these groups, and the sound between an upright and electric that the bass creates is so distinct that it creates more possibilities than i imagined.
all the pictures on this thread are wonderful, but i would be very interested to see where the basses find themselves.
do tell!

i use my (fretted) Deep 5 mainly for modern music, in a duo-setting (flute and bass). We're playing music written by a german composer, his name was Karl-Heinz Stockhausen. He died last year. These 12 pieces are called "Tierkreis" and he wrote them for music-boxes. Cool stuff! We're also working on a composition written by Yussef Latef "Suite for Flute and Bass".
Sometimes i play ska and punk (Rancid, The Clash) or jazz and worship. The Deep 5 sounds always great, i'm in love with this bass!!! I use a Hevos 400D and a Midget 10", great stuff from the netherlands.

about the piccolo strings: sorry, i don't know. The scale length of a deep 5 is 35"

Not presently using my Rob Allens in a band setting because my band broke up and there really isn't much going on musically other than country, covers, metal, and combinations of these. Decided it's best for me to take a sabbatical and sharpen my skills as I have a plethora of basses and books that have been collecting dust.

I use my RA for about 30% of songs in my band. That seems like not a lot considering how much I already loved my SR, and how much the RA costs, but the few songs that needed the RA, well, they absolutely NEEDED it. Anyway, it's dark and stormy blues rock. I don't have any good recordings with the RA yet, but for the 3rd song on here (Huntress), I now use the RA: Link Removed

Thank you, i love them too. Rob is really great in building his basses, very stylish.
This forum is the reason for playing a Deep 5. I've never known about these basses before. They are not so common in germany.
Especially richnote and spade2you, you've made me going crazy with all these pics you've posted :) :) :)

Rob finally sent me the Koa choice which I immediately said a HUGE "yes" to! Out is the walnut, in is this absolutely sick piece of koa!

I was e-mailing with Rob. I may get another Solid 4, but fretless and a few changes I'd want on it based on playing the one I have. It all of course depends on my cash flow next year. I'm having a blast playing the '76 blonde fretless P I got last summer which is what kicked off the latest round of GAS; I had it set up recently and it's great. I almost like it more than the Deep 4 I have and the Takamine TB10. The P is the most comfortable fretless I've played.

I did ask about putting the piezo in the bridge (not just a bone), and in his estimation, it won't add to the sound and would destroy the passive tone. Kinda glad he said that, actually.

FYI, apparently the production ones are just *slightly* different than mine. The final has 20, not 21, frets. I know, not a huge difference, but worth noting.

The hardshell cases are almost done (yay!) and the thumbrest isn't machined yet.
