It's prefect for a piano trio type gig, and results in huge low end, but plenty or mid articulation so that it's not a muddy mess. I dislike both the Acme's and the AI amps for traditional EB (a little too dark and polite, with too much extended low end), but for making a Rob Allen sound like a DB in a live situation with a rig you can carry in one hand... amazing!

I bet that Super Flightcase is cool also. I've been really unimpressed with most of the PJ stuff I've played (I spend a lot of time in St. Louis, so I've been able to check some of the stuff out). That Superflight case is the best spec I've seen from him regarding size, weight and cone area. I bet it sounds great. I'd like to check one of those out sometime.

I haven't tried other PJB stuff, but I can say the Super Flightcase is pretty cool. Part of why I went with that PJB was the desire to stick with a small combo instead of multiple pieces. I guess my only gripe is that the line out can sound a bit different than the speaker tone. Between my PJB and the Mouse 30, I've got a pretty darn light rig that sounds really deep. :hyper:

Hey guys. Here's a quick clip of the new Fretted Mouse through the Tecamp rig. It's a quick and dirty using my Edirol digital recorder and the little on-board mic's, so the deep low end of the Mouse kind of ovewhelms the input (although not horribly.. you can still get a feel for it).

Of course, having frets moves the bass much more toward an 'acoustic bass guitar' than the fretless model, but it still sounds big and fat and organic to me.

I'll probably turn the tweeter off on the cab when I gig it, since there's plenty of top end coming from the 12's, but I left it on at a moderate level for the clip. The low end is rolled off the amp using that 'taste control' quite a bit compared to my other basses, but other than that, the amp is relatively flat. This EQ profile leaves you feeling a little naked when playing solo, but once the drums and piano or whatever kick in, I find this sort of tone profile to work great and really warm up in a mix without sounding mushy or boomy.

I'm scufflin' a bit with the short scale, but I'll get used to it. The frets make the 'feel' of this bass quite different from my fretless Mouse.

Anyway, I like this bass a lot.:bassist:

Very nice, I was expecting it to sound a little more "fretted" then it does! Sounds like it is going to get you where you want to go. It would be interesting to hear that A/B'd to the fretless...I'm sure your having fun with that.

While nothing can replicate a true DB IMO, I think that type of tone can work very well in a jazz context for you.

Thanks. It still keeps that Allen vibe, but the fretless is a whole different thing. I'm just not a fretless player, and my intonation is not up to par, so the fretless stays in the house for noodling. The tone is similar, but the added bloom and mwaw really moves it strongly into DB land to my ear.

However, even with the frets, once this thing is in the mix, and if you don't listen too closely, I still think it will sound pretty legit.

Sounds great! It's interesting, as others have commented, to note that the fretted version sounds so similar to the fretless one. Didn't quite expect that. :)

(Hmm, I wonder if it would be possible for Rob to make an extra, fretted, neck for my Mouse...)

Here are some snippets from last night's casual. Interesting gig - award ceremony for a bunch of eBay software developers at a winery south of San Jose. Cool outdoor setting, although the bugs were a bit too gregarious.

Rob Allen MB-2 (walnut over alder, macassar ebony over walnut) into an Epifani 502 amp & UL310-2 cab. Everything flat, except for the tweeter control on the cab, which was down to ~ 10 o'clock. Recorded with an M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 velcroed to the music stand. As always, credit the bass for what you like and blame the bassist for what you don't. :D

i found the all maple MB2 (35") had a punchier bottom than the my koa Deep 5 (34"). However i think the extra scale has more to do with it.

Nope. AFIK, he makes all of his bridges for all of his basses. His piezo basses feature the handmade wood bridge and his Solid 4 features a metal bridge that's somewhat similar in design to the wood bridges. I'm not sure if he'd use a Hipshot or not, but I wouldn't think they're too necessary on his basses. I prefer Hipshot and ABM bridges and have them on plenty of other basses, but don't feel that I'm missing anything on the Rob Allen basses. I can tell ya that the weight difference between Rob's wood bridge is lighter than the Hipshot and dramatically different than an ABM.

Would somebody be able to show me a picture of their Mouse 30 next to their jazz bass? I'm very curious to see how the body size matches up. I like the feeling of a standard jazz bass body size, and was wondering if the Mouse was close or not.
