I guess I haven't invested much thought in other strings because I love the tone I'm getting out of the LaBellas. I get an adequate upright tone currently, so I just don't see much reason to change.

Darn---for once i thought I'd beat Spade2You to something new. But alas I remain humbled.
Just sweet as can be! an adjustable bridge.
i tried flats (not TIs)....sounded good but I'm partial to the sustain. Cant imagine a tension issue. Just be sure the strings can take the through the body angle.
In fact I may give TIs a test on my MB2
Due to some rough burl, I wasn't actually able to go unbound, but we would have gone for it. Perhaps it'll be a new trend that catches on.
Just purchased Rodney's fretted Koa Mouse
I'm a bit of a hack on the fretless, especially reading at up-tempo (OK, in that context, I'm pathetic). I'm hoping I get 80% of the vibe of my wonderful fretless Mouse while removing 100% of the sucking

Thanks! I think it is pretty similar to your fretless Mouse, if I remember correctly... Koa, F hole. This one has a RW board and alder body. I'm excited to get it. I've been looking for a fretted MB-2 four string for a while, but the fretted models are so rare I figured I better jump on this one.

FWIW, my Mouse 30 has an alder body, walnut top, walnut neck, and ebony board. But still, they should have a lot in common.
Ahh ... I guess the through-body stringing requires an extra-long set, didn't think of that.

That's right. I remembered it was a dark top, but confused it with your Koa Sadowsky Modern.
Rob seems to prefer a medium high action. I've had 5 of his basses now and ended up shimming the neck on all of them to get the action down. Some were fairly thin shims and others were pretty thick but I can get the action medium low pretty easily.
My 'Mouses'! Thanks to Rodney, I just received this beautiful Koa/Alder/RW fretted to keep my fretless maple/alder/Goncalo Alves (or whatever that fretboard wood is called) company.
Beautiful instrument, and both made around the same time.

A few years back I sold my first Rob Allen MB-2 - a mistake I still regret. Interestingly, it was just listed at BassNW, and it sold very quickly. While a mulligan was impossible, I did recently purchase this beauty...
...and I've sworn myself to never repeating the mistake. The upright mojo is even more distinct on this one, so I couldn't be happier. Bastogne walnut over alder, walnut neck, and a macassar ebony fingerboard & bridge. I added the walnut thumb rest (from the same piece of walnut as the top...thanks, Rob!) and Dunlop strap locks. So far it's been on four gigs and one recording session, with nothing but high marks.

That bass is now on its way to Japan. And I'd like to thank the taxpayers for the fine instrument I'll soon be playing!
