Ha, once I saw that the battery was REALLY low and most of the shots were turning out pretty grainy, I managed to get these in time to upload and the camera to run out of juice. I'll get on it. Hopefully I can get some better light and/or some photography ability. Normally my shots took no effort or skill.

Hello everyone.
I am seriously digging Rob Allen basses - atleast to hear and look at.
I live in South West England (Bath, if anyone cares) so Rob Allen basses aren't exactly common! I would absolutely love to play one to find out how they feel. In terms of electronics and stuff, I'm not really bothered - a good sounding bass is a good sounding bass whether it has hand wound custom humbuckers, piezo, or a mic. But one thing that I do find important is the neck profile.
Can anyone shed some light on the general shape? Are they flat? Are they deep and U-Shaped? Does Rob leave that as an option for you to decide?
Any information would be greatly recieved guys.

Man, do I want a Deep 4/5 (5 with a high C, so maybe a 34" 5??).

spade2you - I must confess that I have been stalking that Mouse....I may build a tiny shrine...
....I'm not proud of myself, and my weakness, but it is the perfect configuration of my dream bass, and my heart stops a little bit every time I see it...I thought that you should know....:o :D

Hi there

I live in sunny Taunton, so two of us in the SW!!!!

I have played one Rob Allen, it was Dave Swifts [bass player for Jools Holland] Can't remember the neck profile but it was so incredibly easy to play and the tone and sustain was to die for.

If I had the money I would have no hesitation in getting one.

I think I'd say of mine that the profile is ... mmmm ... fat ... but that's difficult to quantify because it doesn't look much fatter than the basses I'm comparing it to (e.g. '79 P, Status S1). Maybe it's a combination of the width, the profile, and the action contributing to it feeling relatively big.

As others noted, it's a fairly fat neck profile. I don't normally enjoy fatter neck profiles, but Rob's sculpting makes them pretty comfortable. Due to Rob's bridge and saddle placement, the reach is also shorter and the top horn is long enough that the entire package makes the neck and whole bass in general very comfortable.

Rob can indeed to 34" scale for a high C 5er on a Deep 5 and I think he might be able to do 33" scale on an MB2. The high C still sounds decent in 35" scale, but I'd recommend going with the shorter scale length if high C is the goal.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Its all been helpful (others feel free to throw their two-penneth in).
I was sure I had seen Jools Holland's bassist on 'Later...' with a Rob Allen! I've only just discovered them properly recently, but I was sure Dave Sift had used one.

I figured Rob Allen would be able to do different scale lengths, due to the nature of the custom beasts.
But the neck thickness is still a wee concern - I had in my head that they looked quite round/fat. I currently play a fretless Fender Jazz - a 'relatively' thin neck. I have played lots of other basses at various times, and I do sway towards flatter profile necks - obviously personal preference!
I do wonder if Rob Allen would be interested in adjusting neck profiles? I dunno how standard his necks are (ie - if they're all exactly the same/machined etc).

Anyway, I am very interested in these basses...

The Mouse I have now has what I would call a fat neck, but as it is a shorter scale bass, it doesn't bother me at all. I too prefer thinner necks, but so far, I haven't had the first problem with my Mouse.

I suppose if I had a longer scale or a 5-string Rob Allen, perhaps I might feel differently. I'd be willing to bet that Rob would at least entertain the idea of changing his neck profile a bit. He's a nice guy, so I'd definitely recommend talking to him before you totally write off his basses on account of the neck profile.

I like Rob's basses because they have thick necks, but to that point: both of my RAs have custom necks made to my spec and based on my '78 P. So Rob is willing to work with you.

An English Rob Allen?

A slight diversion for RA fans:

I picked up this John Shuker bass last week from a TB'er.

Im getting more intel on this bass. Nice laminates, exotic wood. Synthetic polished fingerboard. Instead of a Fishman, it uses a Schertler Blue Stick transducer (which is more like a tiny condensor mic).

The bass has a lot of mwah and tons of sustain. The sound? Less "wood" than Rob Allen but similar sustain. Very dynamic response.
