Having played F basses with and without tops...
by sheer luck I own the two best sounding F's I've come across. Both are simply Ash basses, one has Vol-Vol, the other Vol-Pan. Other than the VP being easier to turn off (
) I don't have a preference.

You're the only one I know who own two ash bodied Fs with a different pre vol/vol and vol/pan!
Can you give us the differences between the two basses...
All F Fans are curious to know!

Seriously. I don't hear a difference. They both sound great and I was hardly expecting the similarity given my experience with BN5's vs. the Studio.
The fretboards even have the same darker flamed Maple. Maybe that's it.

Very nice. It's funny but am I the only one here who likes the looks of the Studio 5 better than the 22 fret version? I don't know why George discontinued it.

I really liked the shorter neck for slap and they seemed also to have a very big bottom end....
I guess more people, given the choice, chose more frets, not less.
I finally found pics I took of my oldest F-Bass: a 1987 BN6 that started life as a fretless. The original owner had George fit it with frets after the fact, and it is still passive. It is also a neck-through which was de rigeur back then for custom made instruments. The finish is natural hand-rubbed oil.
I don't play it much (the F-Bass Studio and BN5 are my main players), but every time I pick it up I swear it has the best playability and clearest natural tone of any of my basses!

I thought of getting a neck through construction, but let that idea aside because of, the wait! 8-12 months! the price....and because George Furlanetto's formula is not with Neck through.....

Sweet!!! That maple burl BN5 is unbelievable. Bob, quick question for you...is there a noticeable difference in B string tension when playing the newer 2+3 headstock design as opposed to the older 3+2 design (your Studio). Cheers!
