Show us your G&L

The recent happenings over at G&L got me reminiscing on the old L2000 / Stingray Classic hybrid I traded to a pal last October. As luck would have it, he was willing to sell it back to me. Feels good to have it back! It’s an ‘81 L2000E ‘hog body paired with a 2010 Stingray Classic neck. Just need to find some era correct knobs now lol.

This is awesome !

Would love to do this with a SR5 neck & L2500 body. Or maybe more readily doable - find a pair of 5 string MFD pickups and gut the pups & controls from an Ernie Ball SR5 & do a transplant.

Thanks! I had always wanted a red L1k.
When I saw it for sale, and the seller was looking to trade for something I had, I had to jump on it. I did have to have it refretted. There’s 38 years of bumps and a little finish damage around the volume knob, and it’s on the light end of the “boat anchor” spectrum, but it plays and sounds amazing.
I kick myself for not pulling the trigger 12 years ago when Rocketmusic was doing the batch run of L1K's but I considered myself primarily a 5 string player at the time & couldnt jusify the coin.

Now i'm older and play the 4 a bit more again.

Recently picked up a bit of a unique bass from Devon thats similar to a L1K.
His take on a 4 string Jazz body with a center position beefy humbucker with full switching. His basses are nothing short of amazing... but this is a G&L thread.

OK - Here's my 2 G&L basses

The other G&L's Had been wanting to
explore would be an SB-2, and an ASAT Special 6 string.

Have given some thought to selling off some of the heard recently as the combined count of guitars & basses has crested 20 its a bit much. Not sure I'm ready to part with these yet though.

HI All,

I wanted to ask the G&L community for help. I want to refinish one of my lb-100's (I have 2), in Graphite Metallic, see below, however, I am having a hard time finding the origin of the color, or comparable car color/paint. The closest thing I have found is graphite from Porsche, but it does not have that purplish undertone to it that graphite metallic has when the light hits it a certain way. Does anybody know the color code for G&L's graphite metallic? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Ed

Not sure if I've posted this one here before.
Left Handed G&L Matador Bass with roasted flamed maple neck, ebony board, mahogany body finished in purple fade with P/Reverse P MFDs.
From what I know there's only two lefty ever built.
When I've ordered this bass they claimed that the purple fade finish would look better in ash because it's lighter color wood so they made an ash body without asking me and I told them I wanted mahogany so the ash body sat there for a few years. I remember a buddy of mine touring the factory and showing a pic of that lefty body, ash with P/Reverse P configuration. I instantly knew because I have a saved IG video of them cutting the body with the CNC.
I even told my dealer to get in touch and ask if they could use that body for another build so instead they did another simpler build in natural finish and maple neck/fingerboard and ended up selling it for almost 5k.
There was also a second neck just like this one in the pic I have videos of both the necks and the ash body, need to upload them eventually.
Also funny that they sent me the bass with jazz bass knobs and luckily at the time I was able to get the CLF Research knobs from the G&L store.

Thanks !

You still have that Big Al ?

Absolutely, that one's a keeper!

... and often a conversation starter at gigs. ;)

Seeing your 1505 got me thinking about my 2500. I use it set to series, passive, and neck pickup so often that I can barely remember how the bridge pickup sounds by itself. It's probably time to do some more experimenting with the controls on that one.

I keep DR Legends flatwounds on both my G&L's to tame some of the raw edge that the MFD pickups inherently have.

I generally run the 1505 in parralel still get plenty of tonal articulation just through how close to the pickup (or in some cases close to the end of the neck) I play.

Its a great bass and pretty light for a 5 wire at 9# even. The maple binding really makes the finish pop.

For anyone who was interested in the outcome of this search. I was not able to find the paint codes for G&L graphite, I reached out to a few people who worked at G&L and no one responded. So I went to Bravo's guitar finish here in Santa Fe Springs, and he had Charcoal Frost Metallic, so I decided to go with that one. The color came out great, and the finish is flawless. The charge for stripping and finishing in nitro was agreeable to me, about (650.00) and took about 5 weeks start to finish. I also noticed that the original G&L red burst finish added about 6 oz. as the bass now weight less. It was 9.0 lbs and is not about 8.6 lbs, I was not aware finish could add that much weight.

The other thing I did to the bass was add an MFD split pickup with neodymium magnets. Sort of a "what would Leo do?" if he was still around and updating his designs. I am very happy with how the bass came out (finish and tone).

I thought I would add some gratuitous shots of my recently refinished bass in nitro Charcoal frost metallic
That's beautiful! I am willing to bet that the weight reduction came more from the prep work and sanding to remove old finish, more than the weight of the finish itself.

Chris Squire said that when he had his original Rick refinished twice it got lighter and thinner each time. He felt that accounted for much of the bass's unique tone, plus a faulty neck p'up.
