The piezo loaded RA basses (the ones without a visible pickup) are active and the EQ is active. he only does passive magnetic pickups. I think that you will find, especially with the Mouse, that it is a very natural sounding active system. This is probably due to the hollow body.

Sunday I did a jazz trio gig (guitar, harmonica, bass) and did one set with the MB-2, the other with my Zon Lightwave. The MB-2 was incredibly big/warm/fat sounding. Totally filled out the sparse instrumentation and supported everything. No hint of typical piezo clack. Very different sound from the Lightwave. Not an upright, but similar vibe/feel. In fact better than most uprights in amplified situations but ymmv. I find that the uprights I had in the past would sound great acoustic, but that never really translated well through an amp.

I once had a guy say that the my RA basses sounded better than any amplified upright could. The only time I have heard an upright that could compete from a live perspective was Stanley Clark with RTF.

Has Rob ever done a short scale (32") Deep 4 or 5?

I read about a Deep Mouse on one of these threads but never heard anything more about it. Anyone have any info?

I just sent my deposit for a Deep 4. I really wanted Macassar ebony (I love the brown streaks) but Rob said all the fb and bridges are already made up in Gaboon ebony. I worry about the amount of humidity and dryness in this New England climate.

I once talked to him about a 33" scale Deep 5 (High C), but he said something about the design gets a little too soft sounding and he would have to add a solid rosewood tone block to add some definition. So it can be done, but the extra 1" adds perhaps a little more effort and $ than it should. So, I'll most likely be ordering 34" scale when I finally order one, hopefully next year.

The Deep Mouse was basically a Mous 30, but with a 50% thicker body made of mahogany, although the body design wasn't quite shaped like a Deep /5. I was tempted to do that with mine, but went with the conventional thickness and ash. I can't say I'm unhappy with the lumber choice, but I wonder about it every once in a while. Not sure if anyone who posts here has ordered a Deep Mouse.

I know the Deep 4 and 5's come with the hardshell case but I was wondering what the gig bag looks like? Is it like the protect that comes with the Mouse only deeper? It would be nice to have both b/c I really don't like carrying cases around.

Deeps come with a case, but I'm going to buy a gig bag as well as I hate cases unless I have to fly. iirc Rob said he doesn't offer the gig bag as an option with the Deeps as he had a tough time getting ones that fit perfectly whereas with the case it is spot-on. I can live with a decent fitting gig bag, so will probably get a Sadowsky Portabag or something else to use with my Deep 5.

I wouldn't even consider a lined fingerboard - I hate them. Rob has some great fingerboards made up. I think my bass is another month out or so. Not sure...I don't want to bug him about it and am happily playing my MB-2 at the moment.

Rob told me that he did build one 32" Deep 4 and that it was a "thick" sounding instrument. Not sure exactly what that means. Is the owner of this 32" Deep 4 on TB? Does anyone have any info about this bass?

Fella's,

I've had my Mouse 30 since June last year and haven't played anything else since - the thing is incredible.

I'm due an MB2 with f-hole any time now. I know Rob's guy's had been unwell over Xmas which has put things back a little.

Rob's added a comparison section to his website recently (seen it?). For those of you lucky enough to have/had both an MB2 and a Mouse, would you describe the tonal differences for me?

You can get a pretty decent bite, but it also changes the tone a fair amount. You also can eq your amp depending on what you're using to get a bit more forward mid speak. I actually have ended up cutting the bass a tad and increasing hi mids to get it a bit more nasal. They are incredibly rich/full sounding instruments, and in a busy mix they can overpower things. Last night I was doing a jazz bass/guitar/female vocal situation and it just kills for that.
