And why is there an extra pick up for the top string? To give them more depth?

That small pick up is for the high strings when the player wants to solo the higher strings(when the Bass strings are disengaged).

well I have a 5 strings MusicMan's copy with a guitar pickup next to the neck which just gets signal from the 4 high strings only so you can use the low b as a thumb rest lol or whenever you don't want the low be to sound at all and play the heck out of the others without being afraid of making the low b ring and as it is a very hot pickup it really changes the tone and when both work together it enhances the output of the 5 strings humbucker a real Frankenstein!
