I build the basses from scratch. Make a bass, then age it.

I have owned my '64 II since 1978. In the late '80s I installed a Seymour Duncan "Hawkbucker" pu in the bridge position that wasn't there. I made an ebony/abalone pg (have the original safely stored away along with pu/bridge covers), installed a Badbird bridge for correct intonation, and a brass nut to replace the incorrectly spaced nut from the factory. It's "vintage", it's "valuable" and it's my bass which I still play. Emphasis on "my". Over many years, I really don't recall ever having someone give me 'flack' for modifying it - most all people (at a live show for example) could care less what you are playing. If I get comments at all, it's for my playing, not what I'm playing. ;)

What do you mean by 'Dano style construction'? Hope your recovery is steady and completed as soon as possible. :thumbsup:

I think it is likely more a collector than player attitude. I, like many, want to modify my bass to fit with what I like and find useful. Those who are collectors typically want to preserve basses in their original condition. I feel like I'm a bit of both, but more of a player.

Same here - basically I am a collector of what I can afford! :)
