It's a '61 that, so far as I understand, spent most of its life in Italy. Heat is almost surely a factor - and AC has been very uncommon there.
Brighter 19th fret dot is almost sure sign of 'ski jump' repair - also seems like heat contributes to that.

I just had to post this as the antithesis of my thread - this is the absolute cleanest Dec 1966 J I have ever seen. Just impossibly pristine!

It has a good playing neck with great frets. This bass is all original and 100% complete along with its original hardshell case. Everything remains structurally sound with no cracks, breaks or repairs.

Only other vintage bass I've seen in this condition was one I wish I'd have seen when it was listed on Reverb. 1962 Danelectro Dane w/OHSC :drool:

Good example of the hybrid tort guards that started late '64 - early '65 and then through the mid 60's - top layer is still nitrate/celluloid and the white and black layers are vinyl/PVC. One advantage is they don't shrink as much as the all celluloid ones (but can obviously still split/crack - but that break at the jack is probably from the cord being stepped on or similar, not from shrinkage).

Man, that Dano Dane is incredible. Finish is so clean I have to think it's a refin but crazy cool either way.

I saw it on Reverb after getting my Dano made '68 Coral Deluxe Bass, which was essentially a RI of the Dane. It sold a couple years prior for a very affordable price by today's standards. Judging from the 'like-new' chrome and pg - I think it must have been in its case in a closet for decades.

My Hagström Swede bass had the most wonderful neck and playability, but the solid, super thick, single-cut mahogany body put the weight at almost 11 lbs. Then the neck pocket started developing a huge structural crack so I decided it was time to make a new body for that neck. Found an unrouted $36 arched super-strat type of guitar body on guitarfetish's factory buyout page, routed the weird dimension neck pocket required, did an off-white rattlecan finish, which came out pretty ratty due to an unexpected sunshower that hit before the finish had fully dried, so I decided to give it the worn and torn driftwood look! Very happy with how it came out. Lightweight, plays just as well as the original Swede bass did, and great tone with a single t-bird pickup in the neck position and a Tobias 3-band preamp.

I dig it! :thumbsup: And I like the way you finished it also. T-bird pu? What scale is it? I did something recently with a similar 'super-strat' guitar body, modded hs Epi Goth neck & vintage Teisco pu's/control knobs.

Thanks! Yeah, it's a vintage style thunderbird humbucker, made in Korea I believe. Short scale, narrow fretboard but massive depth. I find it super comfy.

Cool superstrat/epi Frankenstein! Great styling and pickup choice.
