Super nice! - thanks for posting! It's interesting how players many times flipped the ashtray. Judging from the location of the screws - it is probably to give more string access toward the bridge, even if just a little.

If I'm not mistaken, there is foam attached to the cover for muting the strings, but when it's flipped like in the photo, that foam doesn't touch the strings.

Good point - yet another reason for flipping it! I've never read this anywhere but I wouldn't be surprised if Leo considered this option.

Fender Jazz Bass SPECIAL Shorline Gold Smith Era RARE Bound Maple Neck OHSC 1982

As this is on Reverb, I can't grab a pic to post so you'll have to click the link to check it out. Pretty cool all the way around - white bound & dot maple neck, gold Fender stamped tuners (& hardware), and Shoreline gold over (green? turquoise?) From the factory? A double refinish? Who knows?

This is what they generally look like (aside from an added gold Hipshot drop-D) - more Aztec gold.

It's a good friend's. I would have first chance at it if he decides to sell, it's an 11.6 lb. beast though! Some more wear shots for your viewing pleasure :cool:

Very nice - I've heard these early 80's J's were heavy beasts - 11.6lbs!! a deal breaker in my book - thanks for posting! :thumbsup:

If I was seriously in the market or that bass came up locally at a "bargain price" I wouldn't be entirely discouraged. I've played/owned some killer heavyweights. Some heavy basses are more comfortable than others. Thankfully though, I don't have any physical limitations that would preclude me from owning/playing such a beast....if the situation was just right.
I do understand and respect injuries and such, as well as personal preference. No beef here, price is the greatest equalizer.
