If I was seriously in the market or that bass came up locally at a "bargain price" I wouldn't be entirely discouraged. I've played/owned some killer heavyweights. Some heavy basses are more comfortable than others. Thankfully though, I don't have any physical limitations that would preclude me from owning/playing such a beast....if the situation was just right.
I do understand and respect injuries and such, as well as personal preference. No beef here, price is the greatest equalizer.

There are a few basses I've liked over the years, the Ibanez Black Beauty being one. I've heard they are usually around 11lbs so I just admire from afar. My cut-off is 10lbs. I have a couple at that weight, one of which is my Bond Girl gigging bass. (a 60's style J) Luckily our sets are only 40-45 min, but rehearsals are 3 hrs. I can handle the weight but I eventually I plan to have Pat Wilkins make me a nice light 'roasted' body for it which will drop it over a pound to 8 something. The basses I make are all around 8lbs - so nice to play at that weight!

And here's my 76 Tele Custom to get back to the distressed theme of this thread This guitar came to me with a bad rattle can paint job in teal green. I thought I saw Olympic hiding under the bad refin so I carefully removed the teal to reveal the highly road worn original finish you see here!

The '78 looks nice - but 12.6lbs! I almost bought a sunburst '78 in VGC but it was around 10lbs. (it was alder) The '67 Tele's are cool - maple board maple necks, bullet tr, bucker, 3 screw neck plate and that transition decal -

I had the exact same bass and it was extremely heavy. Sold it to a friend in highschool and he still uses it.

Whilst being a conglomeration of pickups from the late 70's, a bridge made of 70's intonation bolts, 60's saddles, pots from Godknowswhen, it is sporting an untouched 66 dot/bound neck with the fabulous paddle tuners, and an all original untouched 1970 body in factory sunburst nitro. And as JIO astutely pointed out, there is no Fullerplast under the burst.

And this is just awesome - a big chunk missing...so what do you do? Borrow little sister's marking pens of course!

According to the dude I bought it off he bought a 66 in the mid 70's. It had the finish sanded off with a disk sander - so badly that all the original contours of the body had been destroyed. If you look closely at the top edge of the guard, you can see it's ever so slightly worn away, and there's tiny disk-swirl sanding marks in it - the sander-bandit didn't even bother taking off the pickguard when he went crazy on the paint. So the guy who had it before me went into his local guitar store and they gave him what you now see - the 1970 body, so the old, sanded 66 body got binned and everything else was transplanted onto the new 1970 sunburst body. Michael, the guy I bought it off, played it sporadically up until the late 80's, then went back to guitar and parked this one under his bed. Until a few months ago.

I just got this May 1977 Stingray. It has been on a long, long road before ending up in my hands.
I did change the d-tuner to the correct one and I'll fix the mutes, but otherwise I'm just gonna continue adding to the wear: it's a funk machine

Very nice find. I had a stock 66 I found in the "buy n sell" newspaper for 1250 and aching to get one back. That is her in the top right corner. Huge divot around the bridge pickup. The wear was a piece of art. Ignore the case, that just had one of Phil's 1960 stack knobs. I'm going to take that pic down in a bit, Phil might not appreciate me posting his name everywhere.

That's my 74 p bass's twin. I was going to go for a black guard, but tort always looks so dam good. Unfortunately, your serial number got moved to the headstock.

Actually the numbers on the headstock are the patent pending numbers. I believe it originally had a different neckplate maybe, much of the bass isnt correct. The neck, tuners, string tree and body (correct routes for the year) are original as is the bridge plate but not the saddles. The rest is later aftermarket, neck dates to Jan 1973. Would be nice to slowly piece it back to more original as parts pop up for fair prices, but I enjoy it as is and wont be rushing to eBay to pay insane prices.

At risk of sounding insensitive to the victims of hurricane Harvey, I'd like to preface this post by saying my heart and financial support goes out to families and victims who have gone through this terrible event, and I am glad to know that the owner and family of the man owns this bass is safe and doing well.

This bass is that of the father-in-law of TB's own billiam5billion. I would never wish for anyone to go through what it took to get this finish, but this is an interesting and eerily beautiful outcome of what happened from the water damage of hurricane Harvey. The bass was originally black and after soaking in 4 feet of water 3-4 days it looked like this.

After drying over night however, it turned out like this.

This bass is that of the father-in-law of TB's own billiam5billion. I would never wish for anyone to go through what it took to get this finish, but this is an interesting and eerily beautiful outcome of what happened from the water damage of hurricane Harvey. Hurricane Harvey victim

Thank you for posting this and I echo your feelings on people in Texas's real distress of recent - within our pages a few years ago there was a tb member who had a 60's Jazz bass not survive a house fire. It's eerie charred remains told a sad story. He and his family were fine, but I know if it were me it would be difficult losing an 'old friend' I'd intimately spent many years with.
