It's been awhile so to get back OT. Case in point, 1957 Precision. this, folks, is real, hard, honest wear. The first 20 years it played every one of the thousands of gigs I played. The second 20 years it was gigged, but not as regularly. Every mark on it is mine but a small one on the back and that was the ONLY blem when I bought it in 67'. ($125used) Sorry I don't have hidef pics. All original including the case. Covers long gone sadly. One I lost, one sent to rechrome and lost by them. There are a few extra holes. This bass has played WITH the Platters, the Coasters, Tommy Castro, Tuck and Patti, Les McCann, Stanley Jordan, Doug Ellington and many others. It has opened for Trower, Butterfield, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Paul Rodgers, Jimmy Witherspoon etc. its been around. Under the thumb rest there is a hole gouged by my thumbnail I moved the thumbrest to cover the hole and protect it from damage to the pickup. Look how worn down the Thumbrest is. Actually I think I took pretty good care of it compared to many more beat up instruments. Yea and that E string silk, not my doing, the pics are a couple of yrs old from the guy I very reluctantly sold it to 10 yrs ago. From what I read Fender stopped using nitro in 1966. By 1968 Poly was being used on everything

I've seen similar information but my late '66 P-bass is definitely nitro. So either that was a very light poly coat or there were some overlapped nitro finished bodies that creeped into the early 70's.

One thing that bothers me is the Custom Shop Geddy Lee. Why did they finish it in nitro when it was originally done in poly

For sure the necks started getting shot poly late 60's/early 70's even if some bodies were nitro. The maple stays light/pale and doesn't amber like the ones with nitro clear-coats. The hs faces on the other hand had clear nitro shot over the decals and some amber'd pretty dramatically.

I think because it was the type of sig made to his specs/request, and not necessarily to duplicate a specific instrument.

That pic is of the earliest known surviving custom color Dakota Red P bass was the basis for the ZZ decal/face copy's. there is a TB member here who's name escapes me now, who collects 51' 52' Precisions and he has quite a few, that IIRC, knows the big collector who purchased it and had it completely restored. I'll try to find him.

1962 Fender Jazz!

This is Leo Lyons bass, used on the Ten Years After gigs. This one is the original one you may of seen him play in the '69 Woodstock movie. Comments by Leo. I saw him in '69 in Vancouver and this bass looked very used, just like today's pic. That show is one of the reasons I developed a love for fender basses.

He tours with a reproduction of the '62 that looks just like it, except the headstock is slightly different. That reproduction bass was made by the Bass Centre London for him.

These pics are his original 1962 jazz, with all the gig mojo wear.
