Every year our forum does a knifemaker buildoff. These are most of the entries and finalists. The winners are announced at the Blade Show in Atlanta every year.

Cool!

Marshall is another Florida guy. He does nice work and is a really nice guy. He was a metal/welding fabricator before he got into knifemaking. He posted some of his fabrication work in the OT area. Amazing stuff, talented guy.

Frank is in a very unique "spot" for an up and coming knifemaker. His father, Todd is an incredible knifemaker who has a very well equipped shop and forges his own damascus. They also have a really nice Hass CNC milling machine so for a knifemaker, they are set up for the best of both worlds. Also, living right next door is Stan Wilson, another incredible maker. Frank really can't go wrong :D He's a super nice kid too. They all live about 15 minutes away from me and I enjoy hanging out at their shop.

Lot's of Damascus. I was about to ask are there custom knifemakers that don't use it?

The pattern on the Brad Southard piece is eye catching.

I really dig the DJ Urbanovbsky. Looks like it was designed with the aid of a computer.

PS,...if it was Kit Carson that came up with this happy little trigger deal......

Tell him I said thanks. With a little bit of 3 in 1 oil it's one of the easiest opening knives out there.

I'm not completely familiar with all of Kit's and CRKT's patents or mechanisms. That looks like one of his designs though. Sometimes companies will take patented mechanisms from one makers designs and use them on others. It gets confusing!

That one looks like a basic "flipper" opener of which just about everyone does. That one might be spring assisted??

Very much so. I'm particularly impressed with the Brad Southard piece - the layering must be incredibly regular and even to get that kind of pattern. Is there some special trick to that?

I've tried doing Damascus myself (just for interest's sake) using old files as a base but never got 1% of what these folks have achieved. Very impressed.

I'm pretty sure it isn't. The smaller knob is a locking mechanism. I believe CRKT call is "LAWKS".

The damascus on that knife is stainless and it's made by Chad Nichols. Chads damascus is just plain incredible. Making stainless damascus requires some special processes and much of the raw materials are ground away to get those wild patterns. Chad is a very good friend of mine and I use his material ofen. I also know some of the tricks he uses to get the patterns. He knows I'll never attempt it myself or tell anyone else :)
