My HyDrives are definitely not lacking for high end. They're listed as 20 Hz - 17 kHz so those cabs will get up there. That's including the tweeters of course but even with the tweeters off there's plenty of highs. In fact I run them with the tweeters off.

Some of the older vintage cabs with just standard ceramic magnet / paper cone speakers don't go super high, but that's not what those cabs were about back then. They were designed to produce fat bottom end and punchy mids. However, even back then JBL's, Altec's, EV SRO's, and PV Black Widows had lots of high end available.

Have a look at some of the vintage bass heads and see where the freq's for treble controls are at. My old SUNN Coliseum 300 had the treble control or "Hi" as they called it listed as 4K. That head had great highs through a SUNN 215B with SUNN SPL speakers in it. It's all in what freq you consider highs. Those old rigs had highs but I wouldn't call them "Hi-Fi" :)

This design came to me in the twilight of my sleep. I don not have any drawings of the cabinet, but I do have a memory of its construction. The cabinet's external dimensions are 24" wide, 36" tall and 15" deep. A 1/2" plywood liner was placed on the inside front edge of the cabinet to make it look "beefy". The port in the 2 X 15" cabinet was 5" high and ran the entire width of the cabinet. The horn baffle was formed out of two pieces of 1/2" plywood. The horizontal piece being about 3 to 3-1/2" in depth and the 45 degree angle piece being 9" long. On the dual 15" cabinet there were two baffle assemblies. The 1/2" plywood horn baffle pieces were glued into routed grooves in the sides of the cabinet. The single 15" was simply 1/2 of the dual 15" cabinet with the port at the bottom of the cabinet with a single horn baffle assembly. I could sketch it for you but no draw capabilities on this e-mail response mechanism. I would be more than happy to send you a sketch.

These were loaded with JBL 140's but you could use the same basic design and adjust cab sizes to match whatever speaker you want to use.

EAW VB-125 cab, vintage 80s, loaded with an Eminence Kappalite 3015.

Gets a little ugly -sounding pretty quick on its own if you punch up the volume on the amp, but in the band it delivers smooth, punchy, deep presence, even outdoors without PA.

I'm working on getting this loaded with 3015s as well, or I might just clone the EAW. For now I have this though, which sounds good, especially for the dirty rock gig.

The tweeter was shot when I got it, so I nixed the crossover and wired the 15s to the input jack. It's a bit 'muted' sounding compared to some other 2x15s out there- the stock Hartke "VLF-1508" drivers need that tweeter for highs- nonetheless I can dial some in...
