Show Your Pandemic Mods

Changed a McRuiz Draco from a 5 to a 4 string. Changed the Delano 5 string PUs to 4 string Delano. Dave from Frets on the Net made me custom PU rings to cover the gap. Removed the Kahler bridge and took off on saddle and ball end claw. And removed on tuner a made a removal plug to cover hole. Now it can be converted to 5 or 4 by just reversing the order. It now has a 199mm spacing.

My PJ. A few different pickup sets and neck swaps.View attachment 4273710 View attachment 4273709

Hmmm, I think that's it. Guess it's about time to start figuring out the next project.

Man! that Talman looks amazing! Nice job.

Swapped necks on two builds. Required neck pocket routing and fairly extensive setups. Changed one of those over to all blacked out with a vintage Kramer/Schaller roller bridge. Also changed pickup and bridge on my peavey fury. (EMG GZR). New bridge on my 4-string short scale build (kickass). Changed the pickups in my spector euro 4 to EMG-X's.

Currently I'm doing the craziest thing I've ever done, but won't post till it's done. It could still go very wrong.

Not only was it a big time for buying guitars and basses during the pandemic, but it was also a pretty big time for modding, or so industry reports lead me to believe. I am no different. I made a handful of mods right before the pandemic so they don't count, but I'll show you what all I did during the pandemic.

First up is my highly modded 76 Precision body with an 83 neck. Has been many colors but was stripped with one coat of tung oil since the 90's. Developed a thing for black over the years, resented it wasn't black but didn't want to cover up the awesome ash woodgrain, so I ebonized it myself with wood dye, wood stain, and gunstock oil. Also replaced the Schaller bridge I had on it since 83 with a bent plate and added a Hipshot Xtender but that was before the pandemic.

Next up, I tried my hand at cerusing. My 1991 Guitar Factory bass was also stripped of its finish, so it had to become black. And since the body wood was mahogany, there was a whole lot of grain I could fill, so I filled it and left the maple all black:

Then I didn't do anything for a long time till I bought a Yamaha BB235 on a whim a couple months ago. Swore I'd never get another 5 string but just decided one night to pick up a cheap PJ 5 just to have. Black and white...looked pretty cool, plays and sounds pretty amazing for a budget bass:

I just decided the tuxedo look isn't for me. I priced new pickguards...no thanks. So I went digging for a couple cans of Rust Oleum, found a gold and a copper. Tried the copper first and stuck with it:

Still has a mod or two to go, though it'll be a while. Got a Duncan CS SPB-1 for a 5 coming in a few weeks. Might keep the J pickup but I do like humbuckers, so I might replace it with a Duncan Apollo. But it's going to be on backorder for a while so I have a lot of time to decide.

OK, whaddaya got?
I built this! I call it Midnight.

This was a 2020 Geddy USA Jazz a couple of months ago. Now all black Hipshot headstock hardware, changed controls to stackpots with black plate, new WD black guard. I am going to get a 1 piece guard/control plate made by pickguardian.com and a black Hipshot Kickass bridge as well. Yes I know I had pushed G off the saddle groove when wiping it down before taking a pic. :)

I was at a blues jam last evening and the host bass player asked me to play his '66 so that he could hear it from the audience's POV. It was so pleasurable to play, I left my fiver in its case and played the Fender for over an hour.

That motivated me to break out my '64 this evening, and I replaced the white pickguard with an old tort guard I had laying around. Here's the b4 and after:

Needs a bit of cleaning but it felt comfortable when I played it a bit tonight. Mebbe I'll bring it out tomorrow. The Pre-CBS necks are slightly narrower than my optimal later 60's early 70's bound and blocked necks, but are still quite easy to play.

I don’t have a picture of it, but I replaced my Jay Turner beatle bass pickups with some Nitro Hemi Mini Humbuckers from Lace. They are normally for a firebird guitar - higher output pickups. They sound great. My Turser pickups sounded like garbage and it was a quality upgrade.
I've had folks tell me that Firebird pickups worked really well in them and I threatened to try a set, but I've left my Turser stock out of cheapness. Weirdly, I believe the acoustic sound of it has improved over the years, but while I can make the pickups work, it doesn't sound as good as my old Realistic from the 60's. Maybe one day I'll revisit that idea. Won't be today :D
