When playing rock, I either use both pickups in Humbucker mode (usually in recordings). Sometimes I switch the neck pickup on HB and the bridge pickup on parallel to get a P/J-ish effect.
With my funk band, all-out J-bass mode (parallel), and I sometimes pull the knob for fingerstyle stuff. If it's Jaco-esque stuff I favor the bridge soloed in HB mode.

I have the RBV in sunburst, I posted pics a long time ago in another thread. I haven't played all my instruments equally I'm ashamed to say. I have been focusing more on drums and guitar, I just picked up the basses again last week. I have to equalize, I want to be good at them all, but man it's hard on the fingers LOL. Waiting on my tort guard for the RBV and playing as much as I can.

Thats confusing... Series and parallel are humbucking modes, and now the 'all-out J-bass mode' is parallel?

Do you mean that when you play :
rock = series
P/J-ish effect = Neck on Series, Bridge on Parallel
Funk band all-out J-bass mode = Single coil mode?

Congrats! I love the shoreline gold (I have one, too).

As for pickup settings: it depends on what amp rig I'm using and what sound I'm going for. For a phat P-bass style tone, I use the neck pickup soloed in series mode. For traditional J-bass, I use both pickups in single-coil.

Because series mode is a lot higher output than the other two, I don't switch modes in the middle of a gig. I just pick a mode and stick with it (though I sometimes switch from neck pickup soloed to both pickups full on).

I was invited to play an outdoor rock gig ( I play gospel and smooth jazz) in the park, during the towns "Freedom Fest". I removed my TI flats and slapped on an old set of Smith Burners. Armed with my RBV, GK 1001RB II and a well abused Hartke 4x10 cab, I proceeded to burn down the stage. This bass growls at hi volumes; quite punchy too! Perhaps I should take on more rock gigs, and get a 8x10 cab! Just to prove a point, this bass does well in all venues.

Unfortunately the fivers are out of production. But when you find one: the B string is great. I wouldn't say it's as pristine as the B on, say, a Modulus Quantum, but then the Fender RBx basses sound like Fenders, and not like modern hi-fi boutiques. I get plenty of growl and bottom down low.
