Story about Joshu (the dog who my wife was nervous about meeting). This was years ago. We lived in Venice CA. Rough neighborhood, but we managed.
Joshu was a 90 lb pit lab mix. Very physically impressive dog. Also smart as any dog I've ever known, amazingly loving, and a great judge of character.
My housemate Tommy and I threw a party. I had a bunch of musician friends over to jam. Lots of people the dogs had never met. No problems. Until...
I was playing bass and Tommy comes up to me and says "Joshu is sitting in the middle of the walkway and won't let this guy pass. I don't know him. Do you know him?"
I looked, and I didn't know him either. Since Joshu had let dozens of people in, I said "If Joshu won't let him in, tell him he has to leave."
Turned out the guy was known as trouble around the neighborhood, though neither of us had known that.
I'll be very glad to see Joshu when I cross the rainbow bridge myself.

They come in several different sizes, which is great, since none of my 3 is big enough to handle a full size tennis ball easily. I get the next size smaller. Watching my Chihuahua try to play with one of those is a blast...especially watching him try to make it to the top of the bed without losing the ball. FYI, he does succeed every once in awhile.
