Indeed very tragic. For a while Cliff Bordwell was talking about building some JP styled basses, but never happened. Apparently I was the only guy interested.

Don't know about the 2nd bass, but I believe the first bass was chambered, so probably not as heavy as it might look.

I did, a long time ago. He's wasn't doing the JP style basses though (since there wasn't enough interest), at least that was the last that I heard. Eventually I do have plans for a CB bass though

Yikes. I figured it was a hollowbody. How did it sound? Does the extra thick body make a noticeable different to the tone?
