Excuse my ignorance, but do these basses have an acoustic function to them? I assume they are hollow, can anyone describe what this does for your tone?

yep. My Mollerup 6 is chambered inside. The best way that i can describe it is that unplugged it's definitely the loudest electric bass I own. Plugged in it's amazing. It's got all the "punch" of a regular solid body but due to the chambering, there is an 'air' and definitely an acoustic quality to the sustain, timbre, and decay of the notes. Usually makse most that hear it got "Huh!!?? that thing sounds great!!"

Here's my KR Guitars Ursa Major. All though it's thick it has a cedar core so it weighs in at 9lbs even.

That's right. You can almost see the Al Caldwell signature on the headstock in the photo above.

It has a hollow Dragonwood body which is about 11 cm thick IIRC. Plays and sounds wonderful!

Have to say the Q Tuners are stunning! Talk about a great sound. Very punchy and cut's thro' the mix with ease! Post gig comments are always very complimentary.

My Martin Keith bass is not as thick as some of these, but still pretty thick at the center (radiused body). Here's a picture before the top was added (not sure whether he did more chambering afterwards; he might have because it's not a heavy bass):
