"Shredder" Basses for '07...

...Okay guys, it's been a while, so please please please, bare with me, while I dust off the "n00b," and ask a question.

I find myself getting back into some amazing bands I've loved over the years, namely, KSE, Atreyu, In Flames, Chimaira, and now Trivium and God Forbid.

I've been looking to revamp my rig since my mini combo was jacked from a garage, and now I'm wanting a whole new rig, bass included.

I played an Ibby SR500 the other week, loved the Bart's, and the feel of the bass... If only it were in trans. black, lol.

I checked both Schecter and ESP's sites recently, and am falling in love with the ESP Viper 254. Also sparking interest of mine, is the new Schecter 004 bass, as well as the Studio 5 in trans. black.

The only problem with those eye catchers, is one, I've never played an ESP bass, but loved the Explorer-esque/ish guitar I noodled on. Two, the only Schecter's I've played (Custom 4 and C-5) felt like cheap 'toy' basses to me.

What do you 'metal' bass players think about the whole schpiel, any other basses out on the market for a sub $500 price I should take a look into?

you might look into the ibanez sr900 models. I loved em. Also, the ergodyne is excellent.

or, you could save up for a (long) while and get a tricked out mtd. Thats gonna be my next buy (eventually).

I don't care if the thing comes only in hot pink, if it plays nice, sounds nice, and the price is right, pick it up!

Try looking for a used MusicMan SUB maybe?

i like schecter basses. but seriously, if yyou want a good playing bass for metal, check out spectors, i have a bottom of the line performer, and it sounds very well, i'm in a black/technical deathmetal band.

Schecters are good, if you can get to string spacing tighter than an Ibanez.

ESP/LTD basses are of good quality, you just gotta get the right one. F and C series are quality from what I hear.

Ibanez SRX are excellent metal/almost-anything basses. That's why the guy from KSE has a sig model. And the guy from Slipknot. People play Ibanez for a reason.

The reason I wished the SR50X series were available in black, is because I don't dig the natural look anymore.

I've looked into the SRX's, played only a 400 from two years ago, felt nice. Couldn't get used to the stupid notched p'ups though. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.=]]

Everyday I look at the Viper-254, I fall in love a little more, lol. I think I might just have my local shop order one for me to noodle on, and see if I dig or not, if not, then I'll sell it.

Still looking at the Schecters though, and when it comes to picking for me, I love the tighter spacing, so that's good to hear.

I have checked out Spectors, and don't mind them so much.... Though, me not minding them so much, does also means I don't like them so much either.

I am also considering a newer ATK, maybe the 305?

I've never owned just a 5 string (4's and 6's only) and am wandering if de-tuning a four or just playing a 5 would suit my tastes more.

Get an Ibanez SRX300, 500 or 700. It's the bass that Mike D'antonio of KSE uses, and is the model that his signature is based off of. Killer bass for metal. Lightweight, cuts throug the mix, very aggressive tone.

It's available in trans black in Japan - you could always have one imported if it's that important to you. Then again, with customs fees and everything else it might be cheaper simply to buy a K5 and have the inlay routed out and filled in.

Check out the Ibanez SRX series. They're within your budget and killer, killer basses (not to mention Mike D of KSE endorses them).

Umm viper..254. Good bass. Then again I may be a bit biased.

An all black B254 wouldn't be a bad choice.

Just looked over the SRX series, and you know, looks play a factor with me, call me shallow... I'm digging Mike's sig model, but I'm not dropping that kind of cash right now. Also kind of liking the 595, hopefully the 590 comes in similar finish?

If you mean by "shredder" that you want to play "shred bass" I recommend a Geddy lee , that thin neck is great for speed.

When I say "Shredder Bass" I'm referring the todays modern metal bands, as mentioned in the initial post.

On the topic of Atreyu and MusicMan SUB, what do you guys think about a newer ATK?

save some more $ and get a stingray or a sterling. i just got a sterling and my fender and ibanez are now for sale. aggressive as hell and super fast neck. MM is THE hard rock bass tone IMO.

I took my rig into a music store to test out the new ATK, while the bass itself played very differently to my current bass (OLP MM3) I think I could get used to the different feel. But the tone was awesome, have a look at Paul Gray's Signature Model ATK.

the ltd b-700 (I think thats the model) is an excellent bass. i absolutely recommend that one.
