Shure Super 55

I've been using Beta 58s as vocal microphones for several years in all of the projects that I'm involved in. This past year I started working with a singer who uses a Super 55 (Elvis mic). It's for all intents and purposes the Beta version of the 55SH. I like the sound and look.

Now I'm getting involved in a project with a female singer, I just ordered a Super 55 for her to use. I'll give you a full report when it gets here.

I was in a blues band with a great female vocalist who used to just use a 58. Her husband (the drummer) bought her a Super 55 and it sounded great! Awesome look for that kind of music too.

Keep in mind that female voices have different characteristics and the S55 may be not work as you expect... on the flip side.. it might be awesome!

Last week we had a female vocalist sit in with us and she sounded great through it, that is the main reason that I ordered it to use with this other band. Admittedly, it was a different female vocalist, but I think that it should work out well.

The capsule in the Super 55 is derived from the Beta 58 capsule. We all use Super 55s in my acoustic trio, primarily for the look. We used to use Beta 58As, and haven't noticed a significant difference in the sound. They're excellent mics.

I just hopped on board the Super55 train. Out of our array of live mics, we had a couple of 58s that we getting a bit rough, so decided to try this out on spec. My lead singer really like it and is suits our style (classic country). Going to pick up two more to round it out.

Still trying to figure out the best stand for these mics. Straight stand with round bottom doesn't work so well with guitars. Tripod boom stands looks goofy with this mic, so may try straight stand with gooseneck as a happy medium. We also want to have some Opy-style mic cards made up with the band name on the front for marketing purposes. I kind of despise band name banners flown up behind the stage.

Women have used these on stage for decades. I don't see that as an issue.

We have an old (original) Elvis 55, that still gets used from time to time. Mostly for the look though, the sound of this particular mic is a little dull. Maybe we should look into getting the new Super version.
