Shuttle 9.0?

Not open for further replies.
It is.

And FWIW, I have said a lot of good things about Genz-Benz gear (particularly the Shuttle 6.0/12, NEOX-212T, ShuttleMAX 12.0 and Uber410/212, if anyone's paying attention :smug:), and I am most definitely not an endorser. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

Me too:smug: Heavens forbid that I also try to balance that with my full impression of the positives and negatives of a piece of gear, and also put that in the context of other brandss offerings (some better and some worse), with a strong IMO and IME of course. That's the nice thing about not endorsing any product!

And again, while I do tire of the constant boosterism of and unbalanced raving about every single Genz product for every single player and situation by a few endorsers of this brand, that ridiculous post about saying 'only the endorsers have anything positive to say about Genz' is offensive, inaccurate, and just goofy. That a few of you guys would give that any credence continues to be quite disappointing to me.

Back to the 9! I will again post that it seems killer, and the fatter voicing down low goes a long way in getting me interested in this product, even though I was somewhat unimpressed with the 6.0. Those voicing 'buttons' are still a negative to me (versus variable filters), but with the widened voicing and greater power of the 9, they are probably not ever needed by most players.

Ken all I can say without being ugly is, there are those of us who think you are putting a slant on Gear views all you can for what ever reason.

It's a very nice change of pace to the continual smoothies you produce for a thread not to be dominated by you.

I for one am glad that the Genz Benz people are here. I enjoy their posts. If you do not have an agenda then why do they bother you so?

Is there not room for everyone here?

There is certainly plenty of room for you to be the spokesperson for MarkBass but no room for the Genz folks.

I see.

That's the one thing that is holding me back from the 9.0, I really like the adjustable VLE and VPF filters on the Markbass and mostly use the VPF fillter and I'm not sure how the 'voicing' buttons will compare as I've never played a GB.

The Max amps (6 and 12), have that nice dual midrange front end, the more full fat voicing that the 9 is reported to have, and the very useful variable voicing filters (like the MB, GK, TecAmp, etc. stuff). The Max 6 has plenty of oomph for even the largest single 4ohm cab IMO, so for many, even though the Max 6 is a bit larger than the 9, and has a bit less power, the massively expanded EQ power is probably a good trade-off for those who aren't looking for the smallest, loudest head possible.

I again can't imagine using any of the three voicing buttons on the 9 (given my experience with the original Shuttle 6), and still consider that an unfortunate design decision, especially given the relatively sparse EQ control on that series of amps. If it is a space issue, a single, variable 'enhance' control (i.e., a variable version of the middle button, like the 'scoop' control on the Max amps or the VPF on the MB heads, or the contour on the GK heads) would IMO be more usable and extend the tonal range and EQ power of that series of amps.

+1, which is one reason why I now use ShuttleMAX12 and sold my 6.0. I confess to occasionally use the "low" boost if I'm practicing at very low volume, but that's the only application I've found for the voicing buttons. Which, BTW, makes the functionality of the foot pedal pretty useless. That stays packed in my box of unused music do-daads. More watts is great, but it alone does not a decision make.

I don't have any problems with endorsers posting positive things. Everyone here should know I've been VERY supportive of Genz Benz, although it's worked out that I don't own any Genz gear for now. A Max of some sort is still in my future. The 9.0 would be mine already if it had two semi-mid controls.

I've never been a formal endorser for anyone. I've posted glowing reviews myself and have later recanted on a few of them. The Shuttle 6.0 was one that I thought I loved and grew to just be somewhat happy with. The GBE 1200 was killer, start to finish, as was the Neo-pak. The Neox 212 and 112 are still my two favorite cabinets. I wish I had room at my house to store everything, but my wife and I both work out of our house, so we both need a home office, and we have two kids. Just no room here for much gear. So I move things to try other things.

I don't mind endorsers posting glowing reviews at all, but there is a pattern I've seen. When a new product comes out (from any vendor), it's the end-all, be-all....until the next product comes out. Then there is a post from the same folks about how the last product had this one issue that bothered them, but thank goodness it's fixed in the new product! To me, those little things that bother you should be posted sooner, rather than later so that others can be made aware of them.

At the same time, I totally understand how it feels to have a new product. All the nice things about it can definitely get you stoked so that the drawbacks are overlooked for a time. Maybe being an endorser makes you less inclined to reveal those things later. I don't know....never endorsed anything as I said.

In Ken's defense, he seems pretty honest in all he puts out there. I bought a Shuttle 6.0 when it first came out, and Ken kept mentioning that it didn't have the wump of the LMII. Many people complained about him saying that. I decided to find out myself, and he was right. In the process of using both heads, I decided that overall I liked the LMII more than the Shuttle 6 for various reasons, so I sold it. I still preferred my GBE 1200 over the LMII, but because of the weight I seldom used it, so I sold that. I picked up a TC Electronic RH450 for fun, and discovered that it trumps the LMII (for my needs), so I sold the LMII. The RH450 seems to have more power and much more wump! I'm guessing the Shuttle 9.0 would probably compare pretty evenly to the RH450 since it's basically a 6.0 with a bit more power. I just know that I haven't been happy with a single mid-control in the past, so I'll pass on it for now, maybe picking up a Max 6 or waiting to see what the next Genz head is.

I know most of you Genz players aren't bothered by that kind information, but there are a few that just seem to want nothing but high praise for everything that is released. To me this isn't so much about good vs. bad as it is individual preference. What works for one person doesn't quite cut it for another.

More important to me is that a lot of the differences in the gear really seems like splitting hairs in the end. The Shuttle 6, LMII, and rh450 that I've owned had MUCH more in common with each other than the differences I've pointed out might allude. They all had plenty of power to handle any gig I'd do, and they all 3 could be made to sound just wonderful. One didn't have a mute, and that was slightly annoying. Another only had one mid-control. Another always sounded a bit too clean. Another is heavier than the other two. One had bright lights that were great at times, and annoying at others. One looked like a yellow Fisher Price toy until you turned it on. And on and on, but really these are small things. All three of these are KILLER heads that I'd be proud to own and gig any day of the week, and I'd be proud to endorse all 3 as well...if I weren't such a darn experimentationalist.

IMHO, we should let people post all their opinions on a product and balance them with our own opinions. In the very end, if I love something that every other person on the planet hates, then what does it really matter?

I was overly happy with my 6.0.
To be honest, I don't really think the voicing buttons are a deal breaker at all, just something to give someone to nit-pick at.
I rarely ever used them, and I really don't think I ever even touched the mid scoop (yuck) and the high boost.
Would punch in the low boost every now and then.

The reason I rave about the 9.0, is it DOES do what Ken has mentioned (as well as others) if that's what you want. The big ol "wump" if you will.
I never missed that with my 6.0 though. It was real tight in the low end and I dug that about it.
And the power is nutty on the 9.0.

IMO I can't really see any advantage of going to another amp.
It's light.
It sounds stinkin' great.
Great price point.
Loud as hell.

For me, it's all about good input = good output. I know a LOT of guys view their amp as vital to their tone as their bass etc.
I don't really. If it gets me the sound I hear in my head, then I'm happy.

The 6.0 and the 9.0 both do.
Does it give me that "baby drunk on momma's milk" feeling that something like the SA200 did/does?? Not yet.
But it gives me a damn good buzz!!!!!:D

Ken can be slanted a bit as a MarkBass/Bergantino fan boy. So what.
It gives another angle against what someone else may like and make one if not both think a little.

I DO think regarding the 9.0, that an opinion based on it should be held back until it's given a good pounding.
Discussing what it does have and doesn't have in regards to filters and EQ is OK I guess, but again, I'm not sure that many would use that anyway.

Everytime I plugged into the GK, MarkBass and the Tech, I ran those filters off. Because they sounded artificial to me. So I could care less.
But that's me. Not others.

If you're around next week Ken, lets hook up. I'll call you later, I gotta tell ya some stuff anyway.

+1 to all of the above, and I agree, the Shuttle 12 I spent some time with (using only one side into one cab... so really more of a Shuttle Max 6 trial) sounded great without any of the filters engaged, although I could see adding a low level of extended low end with some cabs, and also a very low level of mid scoop with others, so I still dig the 'variable filter' design, if used sparingly. IMO there.

I always found that I wanted to add more low end to the Shuttle 6, but the bass control was not voiced to add deep bottom, and the on/off bass button, at least with my cabs, was WAY too much. With the 9's fatter voicing out of the box, this is most probably not a big deal, as you suggest.

However, I'm much more of a TecAmp fan boy, but so be it:D

Tech amps suck.....all silver and stuff.
Who would like THAT look! :hiding:

+1 to your post above. I also think far too many people take it personally when someone posts something negative about a piece of equipement that they own or like.
Or IMHO even when someone tends to post "overly positively". Either way, it's just an opinion, and even if the person has an agenda, it's usually pretty easy to pick out.

Again, my point is, just let folks post... on BOTH sides of the fence... and be smart readers!

Don't feel like you have to be the TB post police, and don't feel like you have to get all defensive if someone disagrees... even strongly... with your opinion... and even if it's real life experiences, please remember even those can vary pretty significantly, so if someone else's experiences vary from yours, don't be so quick to assume someone is calling you a liar.

I've read a LOT of posts since I joined TB, and have actually studied cases where flame wars start (because I hate them as the bane of any web forum's existence), and at LEAST 90% of the time, it's because someone takes a difference of opinion too personally. At LEAST 90% of the time. I can't even remember the last time I was in a flame war, and it's because I post with this fact always on my mind. The other 10% of the time, it's just a troll, and if you can't pick those guys out, you should probably not be on a web forum.

Bottom line: Some folks just need to remember to lighten up... it's just a web forum... take the information posted with a grain of salt as needed. Even if a post is heavily slanted, there's almost always still good information to extract if the post contains results from actual product use.

IMHO as always. :)

Back on topic...
I actually agree the voicings on the non-Max Shuttles are far too strong... at least for me, except for extreme low volume playing... kinda' like the "loudness" control on the old home stereo systems. I LOVE the fact that the Max versions have the "intensity control" for the voicings. Totally made them far more useful for me. However, like Mikebass said, even the non-adjustable ones are not a deal breaker. Just a feature I don't generally have a use for, but I'm used to that... I rarely need much EQ from a head anyway, and I've never had any problem dialing good tone out of my Shuttle without using them, so it's no biggie.

+1 i agree with that.

I think the thing that bugs me most on TB are soft handed tactics to derail at times... that's annoying.

I think we all need a group hug.:smug::)

:D I remember when you saw my 212 rig for the first time. The first thing you said was 'looks like a 1975 Peavey rig':p

Now, of course, every time I look at it, that's what I think about. Thanks a lot:spit:

Let me re-arrange my post for better comparison........

Hmm.....

I dunno Ken, I think Peavey may be pulling the wool over here......
