Got it because I loved the gold look and don't give a rip about Eric Bass or Shine Down (but I do like their version of 'Simple Man')

I had one too. Didn’t know it was a sig until I sold it. Superb bass! Too long scale for my liking but really nice instrument.
Not a signature bass, but it was an inspiration to buy one...

Same here. The Fender Roscoe Beck V was my first five string bass, but I chose it because of its features and playability. I did respect Mr. Beck, and had seen him perform with Eric Johnson live, but he had zero influence on my decision.
By that same token: I would not buy a sig bass even if it was from a player I idolized.
Some players do buy sigs because of the name, but I have no problem with that.
I bought a Jaco Jazz because I wanted an American-made fretless Jazz, and it was the only one made at the time (2001). I'm a Jaco fan, but I didn't buy the bass because of him. In fact, I would have opted for an unlined board if one had been available.

Saw Beck holding it down for Johnson... Heavy on the holding it down... Impressively solid bottom for Johnson to do his sublime playing over top of... 450 seat theater, what talent in such a small venue... He had several of his sig basses on stage -- 4 string fretted n frettless, one 5 String, if i remember correctly... His fretless sounded like an upright bass...

just watched Studio 666 last night and pretty sure that bass is in it. The foo fighters made a horror movie that’s part Sam raimi part scooby doo, tons of gore and metal music… they play themselves in a thinly veiled metaphor for the egoistic, abusive bandleader.
He did; he just never talked about it. He said something like, "It helps keep the funk in. Carrots, man, carrots."
I still need to see it. Not because I'm a screamin', jumpin'-up-and-down Foo Fighters fan*, but because I'm quite the film-geek, not to mention being the designated "music nerd" amongst all my friends. That, and I love horror spoofs and satire...'tis a fun genre of movies.
Sadly, I missed my chance to see it on the big screen and add my measly ticket price to the overall box office tally, which I suspect wasn't that great. Well, there's always streaming!
*: I certainly dig a few of their songs I've heard, but I have yet to start digging deep into their catalogue. What I really dig is Grohl's overall take on being a musician and, more importantly, a good human being. To the former, I suggest everyone do a Google Images search with the terms "dave grohl american idol", since it has a lot of curse words and could get me in some hot water here at TB.
As to the latter, anyone who trolls the Westboro Baptist Church protesting outside their concert venue deserves a Nobel Prize For Awesomeness!

I was, of course aware of the Foo Fighters, but watching the documentary Sound City, made me a huge fan of Dave Grohl both as a musician and human being. I highly recommend the film.I still need to see it. No, but I'd own a Roscoe Beck 5 string if they were a couple of pounds lighter.
I have a JMJ Mustang and had never heard of him before the bass was announced. Signature instruments often feature specs not available otherwise. I'd guess there are only a few signature instruments, mainly guitars, that actually move units based on the name attached to them and not the unique feature set they have.
Yeah, they are relatively rare, only 100 having been made, IIRC. Besides the one I had I have played a few others over the years.
