Signature Basses

I want to clarify one thing. I don't care if someone else plays them. I don't fault you for liking them, I don't criticize you for owning, liking, wanting or having them. For me, I respectfully and purposefully do not play them and I still respectfully do not understand why people do. If you don't like my opinion, that's just fine with me. No harm no foul. However, please respect that we are able to differ in opinions and it still is ok...

You asked why people play them. You got answers. No disrespect here, that I see.

if its a good design it's a good design. period.
if you dig it buy it and play it, if you don't pick another one of 1,000.

example:
Leo Fender Signature basses are called Fenders.
Michael Tobias Signature basses are called MTD and Tobias
Ken Smith Signature basses are called Smiths
the Marcus Miller 5 is the only 34" scale 5 string bass with a 7.25" radius fingerboard
the Reggie Hamilton was the first Fender with a defeatable preamp
the John Patitucci is arguably the best wide neck 6 string bass Yamaha builds
the Peavey Tim Landers Series were one of the first neck thru basses at an affordable price

Signature basses are a great opportunity for bass players that give creative design input to be compensated and push forward bass building as opposed to having basses designed by non bassists.

I love my stock Geddy Lee and custom Marcus Miller 5 that I replaced the pickups, body and preamp.

Just because someone else got to the good mod idea before me is no reason to discredit the mod and not by the bass. (Mod being whatever makes the sig model different from the standard model)

Comments like the original post just confound me, just what exactly is your point other than to stir s**t up. This type of attitude just shows ignorance and intolerance and are completely unnecessary. I won't even bother with a comment about the signature bass that I own and why it is unlike any other bass on the market even though it comes from the biggest of them all...:rollno:

But see, here's where it gets interesting.....if I let you play any three of my basses and you played them and said you liked them all....then I told you that one was a signature bass, would you instantly know which one not to like? This could happen, because my "signature" model doesn't actually have the artist's signature on it. The only way you would know it is a signature is if

  1. I told you....or
  2. You understood the manufacturer's serial number codes enough to decipher that it was a signature model

As for the not understanding why people do....you have several pages where people have described in detail why they do. You may not AGREE, but you cannot say you DON'T KNOW (unless you have a little "Groundhog Day" thing goin' on ;) )

Ya simply don't see happy people slag gear that they don't like. I can't think of many signature basses that are what I want right now. I might sell my first born for a Geddy Wal.

Yes worst in terms of that sig on 12th. Otherwise I love it. I don't actually hate the signature.
I'd play a wentz sig. I have a disc sander. Take that **** right off.
There's no bad fender. I bet that hello kitty bass is ok too.

Never in a thousand years? Have you tried a Marcus or Reggie or sting or geddy or mckagan/jazz special? They rule. I bet tony Franklin does too but I've never seen one. A good bass is a good bass who cares what it's called.

Yeah but at least it is the only place on the bass that has it. You cant even read it from a couple feet away. It just looks like a pearloid block.
If they are that close and say something about it, kick them in the face.

I know you said no haters. So.....Uh..... Think of it as "constructive" criticism?

So..... I take it you researched, designed, and built your own car (Did you plant a rubber tree in your back yard for the tires?). And, I assume you bought you a field & a cotton gin, and planted some cotton, all so you could weave up your own blue jeans. The reason? God forbid you wear Mr. Strauss' jeans designs. Wait! Let me guess! You buy your own lye, because you don't wanna use the soap that Mr.Procter/Gamble produces. Really? Screw it. I'll try it. I'm with ya all the way!! Screw buyin' candles to make my house smell good! I'll save my earwax up & make my own!

Look, it's all just a common business practice to sell guitars. It's all about the Benjamins. There's VERY, VERY few players that play the stuff that comes off the rack. You are allowed to like the same item as the next person. Whether they're a person that endorses something or not. It doesn't make you out to be someone that's "not cool." If I like it, I'll buy it & play it.
