Silk Purse from a Sow's Ear, or The Squier-itter Bronc-ora

I used my old trick of the spot putty trick to fill in the little bits of grain , it was available and quick so i used it again.
here is the body sanded out to 400.

When it came to the pickup, I wanted to do my own thing like ritter, but crappily, like squier. So I took to terrible old single coil ceramic things off a 1970's japanese Mann SG copy, wired them in series, laid them out like a sidewinder and put them back into a humbucker case. It's a terrible pickup, but that configuration actually had the best sound when I tried all sorts of configurations. I made a little jig and put it over another bass until i found the most hifi sounding config and that was the faux sidewinder.
I didn't have a smooth pickup cover and I could not find one anywhere locally, so I filled in the holes in mine with epoxy, filed it smooth, sanded it smooth, filled it with spot putty, sanded it again, primed it, sized it and foiled it. Here is the cover with epoxy:

So once I had the pickup complete and I knew it would fit the mounting holes on the pickguard I had to cut the larger hole in the pickguard for the pickup to fit in the right spot.
The accurate shape drawn in place:
I drilled htese pilot holes but I totally didnt' need to and it was practically a waste of time:
here it is cut out roughly with the jigsaw but note that I didnt come close to the lines, those have to be filed up to get right:
i used files and a knife to clean up the edges so they matched the pickup flawlessly:

Named and dated

last little teaser, a strange mockup thrown together while everything was at different stages of completion the body had one coat of primer, pickguard was shaped but not primed and neck was finished foiling, but not clearcoated yet and pickup was epoxied but not filed or finished. The rest will come tomorrow and it will be up to date. At the moment, the clearcoat is curing and will be ready for wetsanding and buffing in another week.

about the foil on the neck, i don't think it's very durable, but it's under 12 coats of clear so i'm hoping it will be good when cleaned. I'm planning to razor away the finish from the frets themselves and do a refret with my new fretfiles woohoo!
I'll post the remaining pics tonight after my kids go to sleep and that will bring us up to date.

this shows a closeup of the seams of the foil sheets. you can completey hide these by using tons of small irreguarl sized pieces, but I like the old style look like ancient picture frames

I used the stock bronco bridge. I'm still on the fence about what will be there in the future, I'd like to do a tunematic style and string throughs like ritter, but I'm super cheap like squier.
I either deleted the painted picture of the bridge parts disassembled or it was corrupted but it was painted black gloss with rustoleum.

So next up will be to buff out this weekend, reassemble, string it up with black tapewounds and thump it hard. I promise i'll post a soundclip.
