Silly threads - Can we get a rules clarification here?

OK, I am well aware that the rules prohibit discussion of mod decisions like closing threads and banning, and I don't intend to challenge any decisions that have been made. However, I still feel like I need to ask for some clarification about the principles that guide these decisions so that I can be sure not to violate any rules I'm not aware of.

To wit:

Are silly threads allowed?

A number of threads that I can only call silly or absurd have been closed recently, and I'm trying to figure out what exactly in the Rules/FAQ section they violated. I didn't notice anyone getting flamed or trolled, and unlike some of the "frat boy" business we had a while ago, they weren't hijacking other people's threads and making it impossible to have a straightforward discussion of anything. They seemed pretty self-contained.

I understand it may well be that there were other things going on that I'm not aware of that did violate the stated rules. If so, then so be it. But if it was just that the threads were absurd and the mods have decided not to allow such, please post a statement to that effect so that I (not to mention new members) can be aware of it.

I Concur.

It's my belief that the Silly Threads add a useful facet to TB, and they've been very respectful, very self-contained, and a lot of fun.

I can only bear discussion about serious stuff and redundant questions for so long without a clever bunch knocking some new belly-laughs over the fence.

What I have observed is this:


Silly threads were happening in OT quite a bit. Many were shut down and the participants in said threads took to posting the silly threads in " Bass Humor and Gig Stories"



These threads didn't belong there as they had nothing to do with basses or gigs , for the most part.




So, IMHO, if silly threads are allowed to be posted, maybe there should be an OT section for just such foolishness. Or is OT that section?



I am an active member of the silly crowd, but I do not wish to hijack serious discussion, nor do I want a ban or infraction points for having a bit of fun with others who come here to do the same.

Silly threads are allowed, but they should be limited to the off topic forum. It's obviously a subjective call to make, but all silly threads are not created equal. Some appear to be created with the intent to build community by sharing in communal silliness. Others appear to be created with the intent to disrupt the community by injecting random derails into topical discussions and/or forums. When "silly" threads are started outside of OT - in the basses forum, for instance - they create clutter in the forum. In addition, a number of the recent "silly" threads also seemed to be thinly veiled trolling attempts aimed at other members, especially given the history of the thread starters' interactions with other members of the site. As always, moderator discretion applies.

I don't think you've been in OT for a while... it's mostly a ghost town over there these days.

What I am saying is come back to OT, it could use the traffic.
