I play in a small, very-amateur bluegrass band. The guitar, mando, and dobro in our group play only major chords, so they wouldn't use anything beyond G C and D on a tune like Goodnight Irene. Also, this tune generally turns into a sing-along pretty quickly, and I consider myself a beginning bass player with virtually no formal music training. These are all reasons why I'm trying to keep the bass line simple, while still adding a bit of interest.
Anyway, I've attached my current simple bass line to Goodnight Irene as we do it. Some parts of it I like, but other parts are not so satisfying. I'd sure appreciate a critique of this line from any of you more experienced bluegrassers. Anything at all that you wanna sayI have very thick skin and I want to improve. You'll notice that I have it written the same, all three times through. I generally play our new tunes that way, but any variations you'd like to suggest would be appreciated as well.
