Simple cab design 1x12... your comments please

I've always been a fan of infinite baffle (sealed) bass cabs. I'm in the process of building two 2x12s, though not to be used together, as my amp won't power down to 2 ohms... Unless I change my mind about the drivers, and install 4 ohm pairs in each cabinet...

I've been using a vintage Sunn PA column cabinet that was cut down to 2x12 from 4x12 (in-line). I replaced the OE drivers with Eminence Beta drivers. Small, light enough to be easy to transport, and sounds great to me. The lows aren't as pronounced as they would be in a tuned, ported cabinet. But that suits my playing style and preferences. I really like this old Sunn cab, which is why I began building my own.

The Sunn didn't have enough space between driver holes to install the Delta Lite IIs, or 3012s that I'd like to use... And that's the other reason I'm building my own (besides liking the sound).

If you'd like some dimensions, or or other details of the Sunn to use in your cab designer program, I'd be happy to help.

Hey scott! Thanks... I think you are on the same way, just one step ahead.... How can you describe the sound of the 2 deltalites in that closed box compared to a closed 4x10 like the ampeg's B410HE?

Also, would you mind sharing the internal volume of your cabs and expected freq response if you know those numbers? Any lowpass filter?

Of course this was 6 years ago. My own design and construction techniques have improved since then, but I haven't had a reason to improve on this particular speaker yet. I used it for countless jazz gigs on upright, until I downsized recently to a 1x8 based on the amazing Faital driver.

Thank you very much Fdeck, Very useful info you have there. You have inspired me to make some experimentation on my own.

First I'm going to measure the response of the first cab i built (the one that originated this thread). I really like it because it has a nice trade-off between low extension, punch and sensitivity.

Then i'm going to block the ports (maybe fill them with something) to achieve various sizes of a closed box to see if i like them as much as I like my Ampeg B410HE 4x10 (closed design) which i really like but it's getting too dirty sometimes when pushed with a GK MB800

From then I don't know, maybe a simple 2x12 closed with the 2 deltalites, or a ported one like the Genz Benz NEOX-212T

My DeltaLites wouldn't fit in the Sunn cab... That's why I installed the Betas - stamped steel frames fit, but cast aluminum did not.

I've used the DeltaLites in ported cabs, and definitely like those drivers (2x12 and 2x15 ported TL cabs).

You could probably figure out the internal volume using 28.5 x 17.5 x 11.5" external dims, using 3/4" plywood, and a 1" set-back for the baffle.

Your basic design looks good to me. And, that's a real nice woofer.

As long as you get good glue joints and don't have voids in bad places (like where the driver mouinting screws go), you should be in good shape with pine plywood. For minimizing weight, maybe use 1/2" plywood, and then double-thick the front baffle (which really won't be all that much heavier because the cut-outs will reduce its weight).
