I like this pre-amp because it is simple - (except the Sadowsky pedal) every other pre-amp pedal seems to have a million other tricks embeded which I don't care for. The MXR is also a good pre-amp though I have no idea if it is better or worse than other pre-amps..............if someone wants to tell me I'll be sure not to listen.

What sort of music do you play? What applications do you use the MXR for? I might get one myself.

Well, anything really - I am not sure it is genre specific.

I am going along the line of passive American Standards + simple external pre-amps + etc. because I am trying to simply & specialise each aspect of my equipment:
- bass: I want it to play well and sense the string vibrations with minimal fuss - I don't want pre-amp complications in the bass..........
- pre-amp: small and external so I can easily move it to each passive bass as needed (which is not very often) - no effects
- effects - I'll pick these and use as needed.

Half the time I won't need a pre-amp so why phaff around with the complexities and extra cost.

Great choice!! I used the M80 for years, much better than the Tech21 preamps (now im a DG fan though)...Really, I just don't like using batteries if I can avoid it, especially in a bass...pedal preamps' sound much better IME!

Well, this thread will cause a $#!+ storm for sure. Some people just can't accept that their $300 bass isn't as good or better than a $1,300 bass.

I've played a lot of Squiers and MIMs over the years. They are nice basses, but for the most part not in the same class as the MIAs.

EDIT: You did read the part where I said they were nice basses, right? I have a couple of SX basses. They are nice, but not in the same league as my MIAs or customs. Why is 'good' not 'good enough?'

being a big fan of my cheaper parts basses, and some with Squire stuff, I would agree, my USA Standard sounds and plays pretty darn nicely and I certainly consider it a better bass. It is in my icon. It is usually not my #1 gig ax because I don't want it beat up. That's what I have the decent beaters for.

Funny, I am on the other side of the fence, I have never found an American Standard that I like, from Fender the only basses that I like are the lacquer classic and the RW.

Lakland is the only brand that feels like home to my hands and my ears.

What preamp you are planning to add to your Fender?

If you really want the real thing that is the new and improved older Fender style then you should really check out the Moollon bass built with improved Fender standards by hand. Sorry guys it's not american and each one built by hand so it takes about 6 weeks to get at approx $2000 for a Jazz or P bass. They are excellent though. Check out Moollon.com and no I don't work for them

Lots of people play metal on Fenders but yeah its not pointy so that might be a factor for some. this thread is hilarious btw, some of the best trolling ive seen in a while from the OP. Subbed!

I have tried a lot of different basses in recent times. The more basses I play (Fender or otherwise), the better my Fender American Standard Jazz sounds, as do the other American Standards I try.

I think from now on, I will only buy Fender American Standard instruments + use an external pre-amp.

The effort of going elsewhere is not worth it.

I wish they made a 35" scale.
