Simple question, Newsted or Trujillo? Reasons why ??

Newsted vs. Trujillo and Skillings vs. Wimbish are exactly the same thing in my head.

Both Trujillo and Wimbish are unarguably better players, but the music was somehow more special when Newsted and Skillings were in the bands.

The Black album has been overplayed bigtime. Only Metallica I like to listen to is.... first four albums, the Garage Days EP and Death Magnetic. Load, Reload and St. Anger are sub-par, IMO.

St Anger is unlistenable to me.

I mean.. I stopped being a Metallica fan before Rob joined the band and they haven't really won me over since he's joined. I'll never forget the day I heard on the radio that Newstead left Metallica.

I will also never forget the first time he entered the ring as the Undertaker. Just kidding.

They're both iconic bassists. I liked Rob best during the stint with Infectious Grooves. As far as I'm concerned Rob and the drummer were the show. His bassline for "Violent & Funky" is just sick, chunky fat articulated fast rhythmic values. The man is an absolute beast and I have no idea how he plays with his bass hanging so low other than when he's got his foot propped on a stage monitor and the bass resting on his knee.

I personally found Metallica easier to listen to back when Jason was playing.. I think Rob is a bit more beastly as a bassist, but Jason had enough going for him to make a career out of it. I think James should've just let him do Echo Brain, but at the same time I'm glad Rob gets a chance to get that Metallica grade paycheck.

I felt like picking some brains today have some fun. Simply just tell us why you prefer 1 over the other. Or why you love both. Any opinion allowed. Please refrain from putting down either bassplayer. Let's keep it positive. For me personally I always loved newsted. I loved his stage presence , the man never stopped windmilling his hair on stage. And he played that 5 string like he was fighting for his life. Passion gets me. Trujillo also has alot of passion for his craft. But Jason is my fav personaly.

Trujillo. He's a better bass player (and musician) but it really doesn't matter. They don't have a bassist play on their albums.

Same here. I remember how disappointed I was when I heard it. I've only listened to it once... and that was enough. Metallica will always be one of my favorite metal bands of all time... but they regressed in the mid 90's through the early 00's. Death Magnetic was a breath of fresh air... but I think producer Rick Rubin played a huge role on that album getting Metallica back to their progressive roots.... like Puppets and Justice.

I pick Kirk, because I love the sound of scales run up and down mindlessly but fairly fast while with stubborn insistence wiggling a wah pedal up and down perpetually, no matter how it fits in or how many jokes people make about it.

Or Lars, cause he keeps it simple and unpredictably off beat with random imprecision, but yet still manage to keep a mind-boggling level of faith in his own skills.

Newsted, mostly because I'm old and a little nostalgic. Plus, although Cliff was my guy, I liked a lot of the stuff with Newsted. Trujillo is a great bassist, loved hi with Suicidal, but I never was able to get into Metallica - post black album. It was years later before I even began to accept the black album, and for the most part I find it to be not to bad.

No preference. I was into Trujillo before I even knew of Newstead, and pound for pound he is probably the 'better' bassist. However, I also feel as if Newstead is underrated in his role in Metallica. He was Metallica's workingman bass player. Ask this, on any of the Trujillo albums, is there anything that really stands out as being ROBERT TRUJILLO?? I haven't listened, but I doubt it. He's less likely to rock the boat creatively speaking. Ages ago watching the some kinda monster thing, it was obvious to me that Newstead didn't get any say on anything, and maybe wasn't being compensated enough to be in that role. He wanted to do something different, and it wasn't going to happen in Tallica.
I like to think of what could have been with Cliff. More complex lead bass playing, with even more devastating Fuzz tone with Wah... Imagine if you will 'Enter Sandman' with Fuzz Wah playing the iconic line.

I agree...Loved metalica in the 80's as a young bass player but once Cliff was gone it seemed as though creative bass playing was no longer permitted. I never viewed his replacements as real members but hired guns to fill the stage.

Rob is a tremendously under rated bass player. Sadly, his skills are wasted with Metallica. He can do more, and sound better, than what they will allow him to do. However, he is getting paid very well, so what does he care?

Jason is MIA on And Justice, and sounds good on the Black Album, but starting with that album they just weren't Metallica anymore.

Bob Rock. Jk. Honestly never listen to Metallica for the bass work, but Newstead is local and he doesn't crab walk, so that's enough for my vote. But it's more like comparing two family sedans as opposed to a pair of Italian supercars.

Why they made such a big deal with the 'Million Dollar bonus', and the 'full member 25%' thing with Trujillo (which I think was all bull but whatever) Newstead was an employee of the band Metallilca. There are so many 'bands' that are just the singer and a core member song writing team that hire 'members' of the band. It's a business at a certain point, the business keeps rolling as long as the core partners want it to. Even when a band is a band, there is always the question, 'who writes the songs'.

You can hear the entire album on YouTube. The bass lines are phenomenal in every song, a true masterpiece. Lars Ulrich should be arrested and tried for treason for turning the bass down, but now we know how good Jason was.
