Simple question, Newsted or Trujillo? Reasons why ??

I felt like picking some brains today have some fun. Simply just tell us why you prefer 1 over the other. Or why you love both. Any opinion allowed. Please refrain from putting down either bassplayer. Let's keep it positive. For me personally I always loved newsted. I loved his stage presence , the man never stopped windmilling his hair on stage. And he played that 5 string like he was fighting for his life. Passion gets me. Trujillo also has alot of passion for his craft. But Jason is my fav personaly.

Of course I didn't bring up cliff. No one can replace that man. He's on his own level. Let's stick to Newsted or Trujillo.

I gotta go with Trujillo because I can hear him on the video game mix of Death Magnetic. Otherwise, it's hard to judge his playing, and especially Newstead's playing, because I can never hear them in the mix.

He’s more well rounded as a musician and loves Jaco enough to rescue the bass of doom for posterity and produce the film. Cool guy

I pick Kirk, because I love the sound of scales run up and down mindlessly but fairly fast while with stubborn insistence wiggling a wah pedal up and down perpetually, no matter how it fits in or how many jokes people make about it.

Or Lars, cause he keeps it simple and unpredictably off beat with random imprecision, but yet still manage to keep a mind-boggling level of faith in his own skills.

Newsted seemed more natural for Metallica, IMO. I thought Trujillo was perfect for Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves.

Newsted never sat in a studio and recorded over the Bob Daisley bass lines on Blizzard of Ozz for money, so I'll go with Newsted.

I think hands down, Robert is the better player... BUT, I think Jason worked better in the Metallica setting. It's a bit hard to tell as the band's music has been circling the bowl since about the time Trujillo joined the band (I'm not blaming him).

Not really a fair comparison because Newsted was given a ton of grief through the years for not being Cliff.

Trujillo probably had a much easier onboarding after a few decades of the band mellowing out a bit.

Coincidentally, i just watched Some Kind Of Monster this afternoon.
As for the question, really tough call. To base it on “talent” is a moot point I think. I get why people say Robert is the better player, but a large part of the reason that seems to be the case is because James and Lars never let Jason have any creative input or really show what he was capable of. And they learned their lesson from that and have treated Robert much better and allowed him to showcase his talents more. But if you look at the wide range of projects Jason has done since he quit, he’s shown a lot of versatility and talent, I mean Warren doesn’t let just anyone jam with Gov’t Mule!
And based on stage presence and energy, as much as Robert gets into his playing, Jason was on another level of crowd interaction and just giving his all every night (which is why his body is now in such rough shape that he can’t play anymore). So in that regard Jason absolutely is closer to Cliff than Robert is.

Newsted, he has the best attitude towards the music and the people who came to see Metallica. Plus, he played Sadowsky basses before it was cool!

Newsted. I simply appreciate his style of playing better. And, just like Michael Anthony, I admire his ability to suffer through the undeserved crap he had to go through.

Nominally Newsted. The Black Album is really the only output by Metallica that I'm willing to listen to.

Newsted because:

1) his stage presence feels more genuine to his own personality and less done for straight entertainment purposes
2) plays with a pick
3) really passionate about the craft of songwriting and art of music

(… but touché- rob can play a mean flamenco!)

Team Newsted for me. Loved Rob in Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, and he is a monster for sure, but was kind of surprised when I read the news that he was the new bass player. Love how there was a brief moment in time where Jason played with Ozzy and Rob with Metallica lol.

*As a disclaimer, I was listening to Metallica in the Cliff days as well and that man...., well, damn...
