"Simple" tube head.

Just wondering..
Does a tube head exist, where it has fairly basic EQ controls, not a ridiculous amount of input's, no effects on it?
I remember seeing A Sunn head like that a while ago, not sure if I was dreaming or not.

A ton of the them. For modern production:

Ampeg SVT-CL/AV - three band eq, mid-switch, bass and treble boost, gain and volume

Ampeg SVT-VR - three band eq with mid switch on channel one, two band eq on channel 2, bass and treble boosts, no master volume

Eden/Fane/something else 300T - gain/master, 3 band eq, two switches

Aguilar DB359 - gain/master, 3 band eq with switches

Orange AD200 - gain/master, 3 band eq

Probably a bunch of others. Traynor and Peavey heads have a few extra eqing options but aren't bad either.


If you go vintage, you're more likely to find something very basic. Sunn 200S/2000S both are only bass/treble and channel volume IIRC. So is the ampeg B15. So are a hell of a lot of others.


There are a lot of other considerations. What kind and how many cabs are you going to be driving? How much weight do you want to carry? How much volume do you need? What's your budget?

At this very moment, I'm "just looking", I have major Sunn gas, but they're discontinued so I want to know what other options I'll have. Mostly everything I've seen at Guitar Center and whatnot is all modern, extremely overly complex, and my current opinion is that simple=better.

I'd dare say MOST tube amps have a simple layout and minimal controls. It's the solidstate heads that go nuts with all the knobs, and effects.

Any vintage Traynor fits the bill and they all sound wonderful.

Vintage Ampeg V4B's are fairly cheap and easy to come by and dead simple.
