He uses the Q-Tron live...if that isnt close enough for you and you cant afford the Mutron off ebay to compare them than why bother???:confused:

That's great that you have a store that caters to your needs, but some people aren't so lucky.

And what makes you so sure he didn't use a Mutron on the studio version of the song? Were you there?

From the time I spent playing with the Enigma Q-Balls at a shop with a jazz bass I think the Enigma could hit that envelope tone pretty dead on, you'll just have to experiment with knob settings to get as close as possible.

I'm able to get very close to that tone with my Pork Loin, set to subtle grit, into my Groove Regulator.

Thanks for making me buy another pedal :)

I really like the voltage control idea of the EHX Germanium OD. I'd also love to play around with it for guitar, so I just ordered one. I can get pretty close to the Sir Psycho Sexy tone with my Groove Regulator with a Fulltone OCD in the loop. I'll try the EHX in there once it arrives. Seems like dialing back the voltage might just about nail it.

I've been messing with my Q balls for a few hours over the coarse of a couple days now and can't get anything decent out of it...

In all seriousness though, I'm really disappointed. I'm giving it another day or so and then returning it.
I literally bought it for Sir Psycho Sexy and the bridge of Power of Equality (Red Not Chili Peppers bassist) ...Def can't get Sir Psycho Sexy effect out of it...seems like it just sucks the low end out, can get some decent funky mids, but over-all I'd say this pedal is worth nothing to me.

I got the sickest effect for sir psycho out of my Boss GT-10B, but after some reliability issues I decided to go with a traditional pedal board...having a really hard time matching the effects of the GT-10B, I know I am welcoming myself to harsh criticism here but the bottom line is that I could get some incredible stuff out of the 10B.

If anyone wants to know how to get perfect sir psycho out of a 10B i can post the specs... put money down that it'll blow any other option out of the water. ...I should just buy a new one, but it's tough having a system where if it fails you're done with effects and tuner all together for the rest of the show...

Try putting it in lowpass mode with the blend to 100% effect. "Start" low and "stop" high. Adjust the threshold to how hard you play. More "Q" if you need more effect, less if you get weird artifacts.

Thanks to help on here and a little tweaking I nailed down the effect setting for Sir Psyscho Sexy using the Enigma Q Balls:

Blend 100%...LP...Attack Full CCW...Decay 9 o'clock...Start 9 o'clock...Stop 3 o'clock...Q 100%...Sensativity 11 o'clock ...Distortion ON

The one bummer about this setting is how much the effect levels are boosted. ...Wish that they put a gain adjustment as well into this pedal so I don't have to use my EQ pedal it drop levels (you have to drop levels A LOT)...I also cut my highs down and boost the lowest frequency on my EQ to further dial the sir psycho effect. My eq looks like a sloping line with about a 1/2 drop to the right (the lowest frequency is slightly above 0, and the highest high is all the way down, then make it linear between the two points).

Thanks for all the help...I'm slowly becoming a believer of this pedal. It's really not an easy pedal to figure out and you can get lost in some pretty bad tones before magically something specail pops out

I've noticed the distortion really brings out the Q, still having trouble finding a clean tone with a strong Q sound. For example, the bridge of Power of Equality... slap part with a clean envelope. Slap can be really dangerous with this pedal... I've been getting some really sharp, speaker blowing cracks outta the thing with the thumb slap

I usually use much less Q and a higher sensitivity. The sensitivity kind of acts as a gain. Also, you might have noticed how start and sensitivity work together. They both affect the same things but in different ways. It's kind of like 2 levels of gain.

There are 2 internal trims for distortion level, and gain. It says not to adjust the gain in the manual. I tweaked both of mine just slightly to get my distorted level to match the non-distorted level. I also run a compressor after it. It levels out the peaks, and also brings out some punch.

Interesting. I was using a Digitech Synthwah + distortion, but just bought a used Bassballs (waiting for it to arrive) as I think it'll work better. I'm also looking at the Qballs, which sounds very interesting AND can take an expression pedal.

Does anybody know which pedals work with it? There is no info on the EHX website.

Received the EHX bassballs today, and took it to practice. This band is not the RHCP tribute band I'm in, but a different one... however they all are RHCP fans and got them to play Sir Psycho Sexy in a break...
The bassballs pedal does not nail the sound, but it will *definitely* work live. Fun pedal.
I still want the Enigma for more tweakability and the expression pedal.
If you want to get the Sir Psycho Sexy sound cheaply and easily... try a EHX bassballs. Mine is going into the pedalboard, inside a loop with a Boss LS2, to bring down the level a bit.

Everyone wants to get this tone. The hard truth is that he got that tone from one take where his dod was low on batteries. That's pretty hard to replicate. Just find an envelope filter that you like. I got the EHX Enigma Q-Balls for bass and it kicks ass. The new MXR and Aguilar filters both have great sounds and are less than $200. Any of those three should get you a quacking sexy envelope tone that you will be happy with.

Tried the Bassballs at rehearsal with my RHCP tribute band. Not quite there, but it will be great live. I'm actually liking the slight volume boost. Last night I was playing a Jazz, tonight it was my Stingray and it had a nice balance between dry and effect.
We're playing Sir Psycho Sexy on our next gig (two nights from now, on Thursday), so the Bassballs will see action immediately.
I also managed to locate a used Qballs today, so hopefully by the weekend I'll be messing with it.
At this rate I'll need one pedalboard JUST for envelope filters and the like! ;)
Yes, I know, they don't see a lot of action really... but when you get the *right* strange sound from your bass, it's a wonderful experience :)
