Good question, to be honest I spent almost all my time with the humbuckers since they are a novelty to me; I tried the single coils in conjunction/blend with humbuckers, but not both single coils alone. I also I am not 100% sure what people mean when they talk about "burp" although I think I get the idea. I'll work with the single coils a bit tonight.

Yeah, everyone has there own description of sound. I too am a Jazz guy. I've owned G&L L2000, L2500, Yamaha TR's and Ibbys with Humblers and they all sounded good but I could never achieve certain sounds I liked from singles, especially slap. Looking forward to your review. Thank you.

BTW I forgot to answer your question about set-up and fret buzz from yesterday. I haven't made any adjustments yet, not even raising/lowering bridge saddles, in the one day I have had it. Set-up is overall pretty good, the C at first fret on the B string is apt to buzz a little bit with a harder strike with the right hand, but that should be a very simple set-up correction there. I haven't "inventoried" every fret on every string as I should and as I will yet; I mainly wanted to play it for feel and general impressions first, too excited to receive it after the wait to put it under the microscope right away, lol.

So, do I understand you correctly, that you have had basses with humbuckers, but that these basses, while good, could not produce a particular sound that you like, which is a single coil sound, since they do not have a single coil option? Just trying to clarify so that I can answer appropriately.

The TR's as far as I know, for example, have/had humbucks, but not single coil option. But, the G&L L-2000 has (or at least had in 1986) single coil and humbucker option, so that's one reason I am a little confused. I always thought the single coil sound on the L-2000 was pretty good, and I usually ran it in that (rather than humbuck) mode. Sometimes if I felt like I needed to blast through I'd switch to humbuck on the L-2000.

From what I can recall the switches on the L's I had were top down:
1st switch - Pickup selector - Neck, both, bridge
2nd switch - Parallel, series
3rd switch - Active, passive, treble boost

I always thought the coil tap was a mod on the G&L

You're correct, I edited my post but you were replying when I did. The confusion was my own; once I thought about it more, I realized I was not correct about that. The L-2000, which has a great deal of sentimental value for me, hasn't been played a great deal in a number of years. I bought it new in 1986, with a not-very-useful Kahler tremolo which was kind of a popular option then.

I can say for certain that the M7 single coils sound "single coil-y" and quite a bit different than the HB's, naturally. How the single coil in the M7 sounds compared to the V7 etc is something I will have to investigate further, but if you want to have a usable single coil sound I don't doubt that the M7 will sound as good as any singles. I should probably do a little more homework before saying that definitively. Riccobass had said he thought the M7 can do a jazz bass sound with the singles quite nicely, IIRC his comments.

Plutonium244 - that's a very nice looking bass. Always personal preference, of course, but that top looks really nice. I've had American made guitars that did not have flame tops that nice.

Does it get you into stingray or sterling territory and, if so, how close? I have a Stingray HH that's a great instrument, but the M7 sounds like it has a neck profile that I might prefer. If it cops Stingray and/or Sterling tones well, it might be a nice alternative for me...

Thanks for the compliments and perspective re: the top. You guys are right, there's nothing wrong with her even if she doesn't look quite as perfect as the model in the magazine, lol.

I have never played a Stingray (although I have heard them played) so I am not quite sure how close a Stingray sound it might get, especially with my limited time on the M7 so far (an hour or so). There are a lot of variations (15 distinct pickup combinations and therefore sound profiles) so, if a gun were to my head, I'd say that you could probably get a sound much like a great number of different instruments/tones out of it with some experimentation. But that is heresay. Maybe @Riccobass , @SpazzTheBassist , @MNM or an as-yet unidentified new M7 owner could answer that one.

I own a Stingray 5 H(w/ceramic pup). So I will be able to decipher (eventually) how close I can come to that type of sound.
