Not necessarily: While I prefer the rolled edges of Gen 2, I also favour the gloss neck. So my choice has been the V7 Vintage, which combines both in Gen 2.

But currently I would even more prefer the newer roasted necks.
I played a V7 vintage at guitar-Target (GC) and felt like the gloss on the neck was thicker than a Squier CV 70s (read: reeallly thick) and quite tacky. On the other hand, I had to get rid of a Ibby SG 1100 because my hand was slipping all over. I'm finding that Sire's satin, is just right. Sometimes the feel of my P7 reminds me of a Zon I tried once…

Right now I'm waiting on a V9 to come by DHL. I've heard things about them being neck heavy, anyone know about that?

Hello everyone,

I posted my question in the M7 Club, but maybe that club isn't as popular as this one here and because the preamp on all models seems to be the same, I try again and post my question here:

If you're playing in passive mode and decrease the volume, does your Sire hum / buzz? Everything is fine on full volume or in active mode with reduced volume, but in passive mode, my M7 (Gen2) starts to hum when I decrease the volume, which is quite annoying. Do I have to live with it or do known fixes exist?

I tried the search function, but didn't find any useful results. :rollno: If this has discussed already, please point me to the corresponding post / thread.

Thank you all!

I apparently missed seeing your other post. I have an Alder gen 2 M7 and for me the answer is no.

My P7 is fine. Different model, but the electronics are probably about the same.

First question is does the hum change when you touch or remove hands from the strings (grounding problem).

Next is are there florescent lights or a dimmer nearby.

I would post in the setup/repair forum, and ask there...
...if you make the question general (not specific to Sire), you will probably get a lot of luthiers and DIY folks help you diagnose it.

M5 here w/ same preamp... Maybe a loose grounding wire a/or bad solder joint?
Check shielding... Most of my cavity is painted solid, but bottom of cavity has copper tape that has been poorly cut, as i say, it looks like a drunk monkey cut it, (yes, it is origional factory installed) very ragged edge of tape looks like 1/4" to almost 1/2" from painted side of cavity... So, lights, tv, other appliances...
My old Rics were noisy as hell at some gigs, and at home, in my mid- 1800s house with old 2 wire, cloth wiring ( still have some knob n post original wiring too!!) Ungrounded of course...
Might be as "easy" as that???

@LazymanHST Which pickup and or switch settings are you getting hum with? Those switches are only present on the M pickups and no other, aaannndd they also function in passive mode where there are fewer wires that insulate hum…

I've never done it to a bass, only for fun like the video, but I would try it first on a test piece of wood, or plastic, or something. I believe it's a drop of super glue, then sprinkle the baking soda.
I never ended up trying this fix because this nick…

89D2DA13-05DB-4F8E-B80F-12FCAB1D1C4C.jpeg NBD!!! I got this V9 for a steal! Weight is good (9.5 lb?)and I was concerned because I had read some things about it being neck heavy…. so I tested the balance at the neck plate on a little blue tooth speaker… perfect, not even a wobble. I wonder if the reason why there's an impression that it's neck heavy is because the thigh cut out is farther back, so when you sit, the balance point is towards your fretting hand…? Dunno but the V9 sounds good, feels good… it's just goood. Now all I gotta do ismove my M5 on Reverb…

I don't have a Gen 2, but Gen 2 has rolled edges and a satin neck, Gen 1 has standard edges and a gloss neck... everyone who has played both seems to prefer the Gen 2 neck, but the mostly general consensus seems to be "don't sell a Gen 1 to buy a Gen 2 just for the neck" if that makes sense.

J.Ja
The Gen 2 neck is very comfrotable to play and the yeah the Gen 1 does not have the rolled edges but it feels OK and seems a little flatter than the GEN 2. Having said that trying to compare a 5 string to the 4 string may not be the best way to compare the necks.

I've said it in the past, but not everyone goes back and reads old threads, and we are getting new readers, but it's so weird because I've never been a fan of Fender 7.5" radius necks. I am used to Peavey Cirrus with 12" radius, so you'd think I'd prefer the 9.5" of the gen 2 over the gen 1, but I find the gen 1 to be way more comfy to me.

Then again, to be fair my gen 1 is a poly coated maple, and the gen 2 I played was satin with a rosewood board, so there's enough of a difference to possibly trick my mind ?

Today I checked, whether the hum changes when I touch the strings and that was not the case.
Thanks for the tip, I will try that and may be contact Sire as well...

The electronics compartement looks okay, at least for what I can tell.

I use both pickups in Single Coil Mode. Great Sound btw. :bassist:

The strange thing is, the noise only appears, when I'm not at 100% volume. That's, what bothers me. Otherwise, I too would suspect a wire or grounding issue. Are there any other parts involved, when playing passive, that are not involved in active mode? I don't understand, why the bass is silent in active mode and only noisy in passive when not at 100% volume. As far as I understand, the noise should be there, regardless of the volume setting, right? But it isn't... o_O

If you're in single coil mode then hum should be expected when you're not using both pickups, evenly balanced. As far as no hum in active, that might be a purposeful design, unintended benefit, might not be true in a different building, with a different amp… the possible variations are endless. At this point, if both pickups are in parallel mode (switch up) and there is still hum, then you have a problem. Aside from that, the fact that you can make single coil hum disappear by going active or turning up your volume is a blessing.

I have the pickup blend in the middle position. For tone reasons and because I get quite a hiss in our rehearsal space if I don't center the blend knob.
I cannot reproduce the hiss here at home, but I will check again on thursday at the next rehearsal.
Thanks for the input. Maybe it's really just the room...
