Sire vs Fender?

I went into my local shop that I frequent to test drive a V7 when they got them last year (after a long dry spell of not having any Sire instruments for a while). I had never played one before and wanted to see if the hype was well placed.

When I walked into the store, the guy had just pulled it out of the shipping box and tuned it up. He put it in my hands and I gave it a run for about half an hour. The fit, finish, playability...everything...was stellar. They had a Fender Ultra Jazz there for $2300. I pulled it down and played it for a bit as sort of an A/B comparison, as both were 4 string, active jazz basses. The Sire was a much better feeling, playing and sounding instrument.

I had ZERO intention of buying a bass that day. I just wanted to test drive one. I left with it. Given the choice between a Sire and a MIM Fender, I will always recommend the Sire. WAY more bang for the buck!
I love the Rolled edges on the Sire! I am having to fight myself not to get one (Have 5 basses already and don’t really need another). If I did get one I would sell my Fender Player Series P

Well, that is very anecdotal... I happen to see loads of Fenders n Squires
returned for resale... And, for some pretty cheap prices...
People are dumping Fenders right n left... Just look at the TB want ads... Not to many Sires in there, but each page is loaded with used Fenders for sale...
So, not sure where you are looking, or just making a statement, which is questionable, just to support your argument...
Good Day, Sir (or is it Sire? Lol)
Just purchased sire V10 deluxe and best thing I can say is it had really nice case . Sent it back . When I hear it’s good bass for the money and basses like this would cost 2/3 times as much that should have been my warning. Now I’m gonna look for something more suitable to my liking and spend more cash get it . I have nothing against sire fender or any other brand . I’m gonna get what serves me and it’s not sire

You might list what your issues with it were otherwise it just looks like an attempt to discredit Sire

And you still have the Right to be able to do that... So follow your bliss!

Agreed but it would be more helpful to others to offer reason’s for their decision. To just make a vague statement as he did is basically a “blank” comment that sounds much like many I have seen before in reviews etc that offer nothing but a “dis” that looks like an effort to reduce popularity for some offering. When you add what you like and dislike it is then helpful to others to make an educated decision pro or con.

I agree, absolutely...
But, I don't think he is posting to add to the conversation... I think he was just itching for a faceless quarrel/fight which TB is usually bereft of... Online where it is easy to get nasty when you are not looking at someone face to face -- an easy way to display one's ignorance...

Nothing he said added/contributed to the discussion... I think the correct word is troll...
I just tried to neutralize is negative crap!! Maybe he would go away to a different thread, and let us opine from our own experiences, and get some learnin' done!
Though, this topic does seem to evoke some emotion/passion...
Methinks, though, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - tempered with the depth of one's pockets :)

One company is vying for your business and the other is basically selling a brand name as a luxury good.

I’m not necessarily against Fender instruments, but I’ve “lost that lovin’ feelin’” to the extent that the onus is on any given individual bass of theirs to prove itself to me at this point.

Good way to put it...
My opinion, is that Fender should take all that time and money -- effort-- that they are using to be an industry bully, and put it into QC!
Be the company you would want to buy from, not a company that knows its product ain't what it used to be, and in response, tries to undermine the competition that is beating them to the punch!

Fender, to me, has lost integrity... the flagship of the industry is full of holes, and is sinking, taking on water -- the bilge pumps, being the coercion of retailers to not carry the competition, are failing, as they eventually always will...

I remember, as a little kid, (55-56yrs ago)I'd go to the music store to take my accordion lessons, ( yup, in the land of the polka king Jimmy Sturr, whom I think has the record for Grammies) and just stare at the Fenders up on the wall, their unique shape, wondering if I could/would ever be able to play one... I still remember a dream I had about Fenders...
As the word iconic gets over used, the Fender is truly iconic... and very disappointingly, they are falling short of the high standard they helped to set...
So, when I plug in and play my Sire M5 ( in a short) while, I know I'm playing an instrument made by a burgeoning company, that is not perfect, but seems to pay attention and try to correct issues -- integrity... Integrity goes a long way with me... plus, I really have a lot of fun playing that M5, while my Fender hangs idly on the wall...
My 2cents...

Bingo. Things have only gotten worse lately (google "Fender gold foil" for proof). They've been forced to react to Sire already, but their reactions seems to have only been some price adjustments and FUD and bullying. Nothing to compete with Sire's QC or feature "bang per buck". That's not a workable long term strategy.

Sire will continue to rise. Fender will continue to founder and flail about desperately doing everything except what they need to do.

Interesting thread.
Im not a maple guy...can't s'plain it I'm just not, but if I was my Squire CV70's P bass in Walnut would go to my grave with me. Its hands down next to an early Mex RW P bass I tried once the best P bass Ive ever played cause its got the 70's chunky bat neck and it's light and sounds like a P and feels amazing.

Guess what Im saying is Fender has had its day....and Im not surprised at all that Sire is looking so good.

Yup, Fender has had it's day and is on it's way out....

Good grief. :rollno:

I've three P's and a J and they're among the best basses I've ever had.

Fender rests on its laurels and fame. They expect their clients to pay at least double to have that decal on the headstock.

The first bass I ever played was a 1972 Fender Jazz in the high school jazz band. It was awesome. I had no idea.

If you have a well made Fender, I'm sure it serves you well. If you are buying a bass today, you may want to try a Sire before you part with your hard earned cash.

I do, several.

Maybe I'm just damn lucky but my experience with Fender has been great. I haven't seen the myriad of QC issues, that I suspect are mostly setup failures at retailers, that the squeaky wheels go on about ad nauseam. Where I shopped, Gelb, instruments were very well set up and there were really no issues that I found, it was just which one spoke to me.

Every company has some measure of failure rate and Fender is a huge company that puts out vast numbers of product.

Thanks, but I'll take the genuine article. No interest in a Sire.

That is certainly your prerogative.

I would only point out that Marcus Miller was a Fender artist for many years before placing his name on Sire bass guitars. His involvement is the secret sauce. Marcus was not thrilled with the quality level at Fender on products that bore his name. Nor with the cost of those products.

This fully supports the arguments in this thread. Marcus plays both on stage. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Fender is not on the way out, get real. But Sire is really up and coming, and putting pressure on Fender to improve quality and bang-for-the-buck. Which Fender has been doing, they've upped their game substantially since Sire showed up. Is Sire costing Fender some sales? Sure. Is this good for Fender, long-term? Also sure.

Them's my two cents, anyways! (Been a "Fender guy" since 13, but also a "Sire guy" since they first showed up). I probably won't be buying a Fender any time soon. But Sires, well, maybe, though I've kinda hit my limit now (6 basses, 4 guitars).

You go ahead and buy that, I don't.

Marcus switching from Fender was a calculated business move to yield Marcus more money, same as his switch to Dunlop. If you want to believe it as some altruistic move to save customers money, go ahead.

Him playing a Sire on stage, marketing.
