I moonlight as a guitarist singer...essentially i play with a drummer that fills impromptu cover gigs...so for instance if he has a guitarist singer, i play bass, if he can't find the guitarist singer I take the lead. We used to use a phenomenal bass player who refused to stand up all night unless he was making $150.00, we typically took home like $100-120 a man. It was okay with me because of the nature of the gig, but also because he was really phenomenal, would sometimes throw unknown songs at him and he would nail them, between a combination of showing him my fingering of the chords and his ear it worked and typically came across better than most rehearsed cover bands in our area at least. So i think its a per gig basis, sometimes it makes the show more relax, but hopefully the talent and music speaks for itself. I would hate to see a bad musician sit the entire night...especially if they are getting paid.
