I've been trying black beauties on my Ibanez SR. It's got Bartolini mk1s. To me they are actually nicer than I was expecting. They aren't the brightest but they sound very full range so if it's going on an active bass it can be a very versatile string. They started out pretty snappy and mellowed into deeper thicker tone but still having a little bit of bite. They feel about medium stiffness like fat beams really. They lasted a long time like most DR strings. The coating just feels interesting. Roundwound players are going to think it feels rubbery but flatwound players would think they are closer to the feeling of half rounds.

I play SIT Power Steels on most of my Thunderbirds. Great round tone, longevity, and price.

The Cort Rithimic is passive. But from what I've heard & read, quite a high output for passive. The pickups are Jeff Berlin Bartolini Soap bars. If they aren't bright as you mentioned, that suits me fine. I'm not into bright sounding strings. When you say medium stiffness, what gauge do you have on your Ibanez?

50-70-90-110-130 these are actually thicker than I thought. They are heavy gauge but feel like light to medium gauge if they were hex core. If you like firmer definitely get the heavier gauge. But they do feel similar to the medium gauge fat beams I have on a Warwick streamer. Just a bit firmer actually. If you like the feel I think you'd probably be happy with the tone. It's got enough brightness but not going to blow you away with it.

Also Dunlop standard series stainless steels in that category. Then deeper sounding like Labella RX, SIT Power Steels, DR Low Riders, Warwick Black Label, and others I'm less familiar with. Maybe we should create a sticky thread just on stainless steels and graph out the tonal characteristics and give them all a sort of rating system. It's so much to keep track of.

grab and bite sounds like xls… they got still be on the top of my list. The bright, bite and have a nice metallic growl. Perfect for heavier more and aggressive songs. They just hard to eq out the bite. Why I think I slightly prefer the SIT. Yes start a thread. My fav stainless so far defiantly the pro steels. I wouldn’t dare put them on my Spector tho ahahahahha

See I thought pro steels were nice on my Warwick streamer but I wasn't ok with the stiffness. I found a similar tone with DR Fat Beams but not stiff and a bit more mid range which was exactly what was lacking with pro steels. This Dean bass is 35" scale and everything feels just a bit stiffer compared to 34" scale basses. I might try pro steel in light gauge but first I thought I'd try strings I've already got laying around. When you mentioned trying to dial out bite I'm actually trying to dial in more bite but not having luck. I have preamps galore and I get decent but not as good as I know I can get it.

It's a 4 string and has the 45/65/85/105. I hope they are reasonably stiff. I can't work with spaghetti!!! :laugh:

I bought a set about a month ago and have been on my PBj since. I have about 50 hours on this set and have to say the are holding up well with very little degradation in sound.

I’m not so sure I’ll be buying another set as I prefer DR Lo Riders, but I can’t say O was disappointed with them.

Gotta love those DR Lo-Riders. Nickel or S/S? Tempted to go back to them myself :thumbsup:

I've been trying and liking the SIT on my two Yamaha 5-strings, but the GHS Pressurewounds/Ken Smith Compressors are still my #1 go-to for their unique tonal quality and feel. If I had to choose between SIT and GHS, I would gladly go back to the Pressuewounds. But the whole idea is to have a variety so I can have different tools for different jobs. As much as I'm enjoying the SIT on my two Yamahas, they will never replace the Pressurewounds/Compressors.

One of my Jazz basses currently wears KS Compressors 40-58-80-102 and my P bass is sporting GHS Pressurewound 40-54-76-96.

By the way, I did try SIT Silencers and was very disappointed in them.

I have a set of nickel Foundations 45-105 on my Spector Euro. I'm really enjoying them. Great feel and tone!
