I wonder how much brighter and aggressive the steels are vs the nickel. Typically steels are livelier so it'll probably go well for what I'm trying to do. Basically I have a Dean edge q5 with passive EMG soapbars. They remind me of another bass with emg that I no longer have but anyway I'm trying to figure out how to bring out a certain balance to these. They want to be big sounding but I'm trying to dial in the mids to tighten up the tone while not strangling the natural deep punchy tone they have too much. It's been an adventure. From what you've said already I'll probably be happy with the power steel on my Ibanez SR that's a bit different in its string needs. That one does excellent with deep Grindy sounding strings. I love Labella RX on that one.
