Blast from the past!

I was channel surfing and came upon a VH1 show (one of their Top 100 countdown shows on hot people) and they were doing their little bit on a girl named Jolene on Star Trek. And what should be playing in the background but 'Jolene' by CT heroes Spring-Heeled Jack!! It took me a moment, but when I realized it, I freaked out.

SHJ was my first real concert, and what a concert it was! They played with the Blue Meanies and Unwritten Law, but SHJ stole the show, without a doubt. Unwritten Law was kind of lame and Blue Meanies were drunk off their keisters.

The sad bit of the story is that around 2000, the broke up, and a couple of years later, their drummer died of a brain hemmorage. I went to the tribute show, which was the last Spring Heeled Jack performance, Avoid One Thing, Lost City Angels and Big Mistake all played and the Pilfers reunited for a couple of songs even! It was truely a night to remember.

Those were good times.

Man, i think the only show's i've been too recently were ska. Catch22 and Reel Big Fish rolled through, and you guys are definately right, RBF puts on a great show. They came with the RX Bandits, and they were GREAT.

Next i saw the MU330, Streetlight Manifesto, and VooDoo Glow Skulls. GREAT SHOW. MU330 was awesome, never heard of them but they were great. I love streetlight, and they were amazing, and they covered a Catch22 (i guess its technically a cover). They busted it out in the middle of another song and it was probly the most ska-tastic 10 minutes ever. Voo-doo glow skulls were pretty good, i managed to get right up in front of the bassist, and his bass is amazing as far as the paint job goes. But there were alot of douchebags there who wanted to mosh through THE WHOLE SHOW. so much for skankin. Great show great bands. thats it.

totally agree...im honestly not trying to be rude but you yanks just cant do ska...however you make great basses, brought mcdonalds to the world, and have now taken over britain with krispy kreme doughnuts...so i still love you and your country...but just stop doin ska PLEASE

I'm going to see guttermouth and planet smashers too in Ottawa though. In more than 8 days. I think the 16th of march or so.

I just saw them 2 days ago. The Planet Smashers put on a good show as usual. They got everyone singing and skanking like mad. As much as I love punk, I dont like it with my ska. The line-up wasnt the best. We have a local punk act open the show, Ghost of Modern Man played, then Planet Smashers and last Guttermouth. GOMM had a lot of talent, not reallymy cup of tea but I enjoyed it. And the guys from Guttermouth were nice too. They thanked the crowd for coming before the show started and really interacted with the crowd.

The term ska now is a pretty big genre. Not because of its roots, but mainly because of MTV and the short little teen-movie ska phase that happened in the 90s (mainly popularized by RBF). Anyways, I really enjoy the older ska music, and I have one ska comp that has the really old stuff (way before the 60s stuff). It's all way different than the new classification.

I just thought I'd add that since I'm in one of these new crappy poppy punk/ska bands. We didn't choose to be called ska, it's just what everyone called us to we went with it.

The SHJ drummer died?? Wow, their trumpet player, Tyler, is now with Reel Big Fish, and Chris Rhodes, their trombone player, is now with the Bosstones.

Last time I saw RBF at Toads Chris came out too, it was almost like a SHJ renunion,
