DIY pick grip experiment
I got my drill bits out...
The left side is first attempt, right side 2nd version after I trialled v01.
Big hole approach: your thumb wants to rest exactly in the centre of the hole, so you need to position the hole where your thumb wants to be, not in the centre of the pick (in my case). This suits a style where you never shift your hold on the pick.
Little holes approach: this gives you more flexibility in where and how you hold your pick as they don't lock you in like the big hole approach. The holes help orient your position, they tell you where you are on the pick much better than just a flat space.
If you want to do your own experiment, I suggest you first find your preferred hold position of the pick through playing and freeze mid song. Then draw an outline around your thumb. Place holes or grip tape directly under your thumb position.
The bottom right pick is my favourite of the 4.
Doing this helped me realise why I've preferred thinner picks (0.6-0.7mm). I lose my grip on thicker ones. Drilling holes helps me grip better so I can go thicker gauges now.
