Sorry i haven't replied, been trying to find out more about this 'paddling', but unfortunately to no avail. It was about 4 years ago that i saw this masterclass, so my memory's a little hazy.
As far as I remember it, the 'dip the tip' idea was used ay both ends of the bow. It looked really strange, but sounded really very smooth. to 'clicks' or 'ticks' at the bow change AT ALL. The sound may not be as perfectly clear as with the bow straight, but then agian, it's so rare that this technique is REALLY needed (if at all). I'd say it reduced the quality of cound by about 20%. (0% being just bow slide noise!).
I don't agree that only 'side to side' bowing should be used when playing. I mean, just look at any german bow player - when playing near the tip the player has to angle the bow to some extent.
I've also heard that neil tarlton has a method to achieve this same constant bow sound (or flawless bow change) thing. dont know much about that tho. im not really sure how necessary it is, but id like to be able to do it, that's for sure!
