His early efforts shaped music that followed and he introduced the world to Larry Graham. He was a movement all in his bad self. I was very happy to see Quest Love bring his story forward.

Sly's importance and influence are truly incalculable. The best thing to do is just listen to the music and be grateful he came along. Thank you, Sly, and rest in peace.

RIP Sly, you were one of the greats and brought a beautiful message of racial peace and harmony to the world.

Plus it was funky as all get out!

This was Sly’s last significant hit (1975.) It was top ten R&B. This version has a disco remix on the drums, but Sly was still on that organ. I don’t think he ever really got into synthesizers although he was a drum machine pioneer. Of course, I love Bobby Vega’s fantastic picked bass line.

We've lost a lot of musical people in the last 6 months, but this really bothers me.

Sly changed the music I listen to, when I first heard, "If You Want Me To Stay."

This song got me into Funk and Rhythm & Blues.

Along with his slow, comical version of, "Que Sera, Sera."

And, let's not forget the line in, "Family Affair," "Newly wed a year ago, but you're still checking each other out."

Ah, Sly, we want you to stay, but as my mother used to say, no one stays here forever.

Rest well, Sly.

I honestly wish I could have met you.

I remember hearing "Thank You" and "Hot Fun In The Summertime" on KFRC as a kid. I later heard he was from Vallejo, a town less than 30 minutes from where I grew up. SATFS were kind of the gateway for me to other bands like Funkadelic, Parliament and The Ohio Players - even Curtis Mayfield. Sly was sonically innovative, blending genres that felt joyful, urgent, and accessible. Just the name "Sly and the Family Stone" tells you everything you need to know.
