If a mic has to be combined with a DI to sound good, then, IMHO, it proves that it's less than ideal for bass.
I know a lot of sound guys that to a lot of illogical things..
Depends on what you hope to achieve by adding a mic in the first place.
If your goal is the accurate capture of a bass tone from lowest lows to highest highs using only a microphone as the source, then yeah you're right, a mic that needs to be suplimented with a DI to sound good is maybe not ideal.
If your goal is to capture some midrange and treble character from the cab in order to liven up a dry DI track, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with a 57, 58, e609, etc.
