Small Combo Question

Add the Ampeg into the mix of possibilities, though I'll have to play one first.

Same goes for the Yorkville. My only prejudice, is that in the past I have not had first hand experience with either of these brands, although I do know Ampegs reputation. :) I have to confess though, the Yorkville name is kinda new to me.

I really wasn't thinking that Ampeg would be in my budget, seems like, ... I learn again..... :smug:

New here but I read your post. If you can find one a Randall BB-125-115 would be a good choice. Inexpensive, good sound not too big. You might be able to find one if you look around in used shops or online. These are the Pre-Washburn amps. No real tricks to the unit. A 15" speaker, amp with descent tone shaping knobs.

Another vote for Ampeg. I recently bought a BA115 for practice. It has CD inputs, headphone out, and you can plug in and flail away without disturbing the spousal unit in the same room.

However, I soon discovered that the sucker is LOUD. Way more than I had expected. I have actually used the amp on a few gigs by itself, without plugging into the p.a. (XLR out is provided, too). It will tilt back for use as a monitor.

My "main" amp is an SWR Silverado Special (up to 450 watts pushing 2x12's), but I can grab this with one hand and it will do just fine for certain jobs. I am well satisfied with it.

I got a BA115 @ GC San Bernardino, CA for $370.00 out the door and then upgraded to a BA115Hp(220 watts, chromatic tuner, removeable casters, and a horn instead of a tweeter) for $570.00 out the door so they are certainly in the area of what you want to spend.

One more vote for the Ampeg B100R!

I have owed many combo amps, and this is the best I have ever played for under $500.

It is perfect for blues and it cranks without breaking up. I have gotten some great tones out of this amazing box. I am very impressed with this amp. Definitely try one.

Yes, that Bassman blowout was just the bomb, but there have also been some great deals on the small Ampegs.

I agree that the BA-115 is a fine small amp, as is the 60W Ampeg BA-112, which Guitar Center had a long deal on a while back for $159.99. I got one, as did some of my online bass-playing friends. These BA-series amps are real sleepers.

This small BA-112 is the first SLM-Ampeg product I've had that didn't have serious QC "issues." I love it.

I'd really like to thank everyone that gave their opinions and input!

Took a couple of weeks to get around to checking out all the different possibilities....... played a Yorkvile xm200, Ampeg B100r, Peavey TNT 115 (newer version with a tweeter), and some Hartke and Behringer stuff as well as my original ideas Fender "Rumble" 100 and SWR "LA" 15.

Then read some more reviews a HC.

It became a 2 way tie between the Peavey and Ampeg.

and the winner is........................ Peavey :hyper:

I gotta say, with my Geddy I just liked the tone better...... sorry to all you Ampeg guys but .............

Pulled the trigger today at a local dealer........ $400.00 even, out the door, new in box! :bassist:

Thanx again guys.

That should serve you well... I've got a Peavey TNT 150, loaded with a 15" Black Widow... It is over 17 years old and has been put through HELL...

Still powers up every time and hasn't lost a step... It's in Storage right now, I just don't have the heart to get rid of it...

Great purchase man, I've had mine for about a year and i jam with 2 guitarists with 120 watts combo's.

I play a washburn and a jackson 5 string and it takes a good ol' beatin but sticks through.

Oh ya it's about a ton and it's built like a piece of cast iron.

Get casters if you are going to gig with it***

Eventually i'll upgrade to a 212 or 410.

But my tnt does the job just fine.
I turn the pre gain to about 9 oclock and my master volume to about 11 or 12 o clock and have my eq set flat.

The bass sliders are really sensative so you don't need to turn em up all the way.

Little adjustments make the world of difference, at least to my ears.

Hope you enjoy it!!!

Like XB 100 just said..

go to HOME DEPOT and pick your self up 4 casters...
make sure one has a lock so it wont roll off stage....
you might want to get a good Tuki cover for it as well to keep it nice and clean..
Check Musicians Friend for cover..

(I p/u a SWR Goliath 4 x 10 cover for about 30 bucks and its the best cover I ever purchased....)

Good luck.....

I have owned 2 TNT's over the past few years. I used to haul the first one around on a dolly and lifted it often..

When I picked up the second one.. I left Guitar Center and drove straight to Home Depot. I purchased the wheels I went out to the parking lot and screwed them on and ...

wheels are good!
