Small & extremely portable rig?

Im talking to a friend about getting his band back together with me as the new bassist. He's crazy about MarkBass because of how light and portable it is and he wants me to sell all of my stuff and buy a 210 combo. I dont want that, lol. I love aguilar and what I'm looking at is the Tone Hammer 500 head and a 210/115 combo (no attacks here please, I've heard everything about how bad mixing different cabs is, and plenty of I told you so's, NOT the advice I'm looking for here) a pair of 210's, a very compact 410 or a 212.

The band is going to be pop punk-ish, in a vein along with bands like Four Year Strong, All Time Low mixed with Bands like IvoryLine and Mae. MY perfect setup would be a nice DB751 and DB810, but that's not practical without buying a new car.

Any suggestions on small heads and cabs that will give me enough volume and still have great tone? Also I'd love to see pics of YOUR small rigs!! :hyper:

Count me jealous on the band front! No one plays that stuff out here. :(

Any of those are a solid choice. I'm a fan of a pair of 210's over a 410. How modular a rig is is becoming increasingly important to me now that I drive a 4 door car and have a hurt shoulder.

I know dude! Here either! That's why I'm so stoked, his band before was crazy good, if you're interested in hearing it its called ThankYou & Goodnight and both cd's are on the facebook bandpage!

Also, pair of 12 cabs over a pair of 210's what difference will i really get in the slightly bigger speakers? and would it fit this music better?

You might want to check out schroeder cabs. they are very powerful - clear sounding yet punchy-in-the-low-mids cabs that can cut threw a mix on stage. and they're compact - designed with portability in mind. I've played thru the Mini 12's and the 310x12 combo and they are incredibly loud and clear for thier size. Yet many reviewers suggest they lack deep response and warmth - but might work for punk. otherwise I have always got'n by with a couple of 2x10 Edens.

Hmm, something about this post doesn’t seem right - your signature shows “MarkBass Club #365” - what’s up with that? And you question is strange - so my answer is - do whatever you want to do.

10s vs 12s is a pretty subjective thing sound wise, their tones are different, with 12s being a bit rounder and warmer then 10s. 2x112s would get you more cone area than a single 210, but I'm not sure if it'd be quite on par with a 410 (there's some real technical guys that can help you with that further).

Personally, if I was going for a rig that would be nice and modular, I'd go with the 2x112s. That way, for rehearsal you bring one along, then for bigger gigs you can bring both! Love those Aggie GS112s... sound nice with the TH too.

All IMO, IME, the best way for you decide between 10s and 12s is to go check some out yourself and see what you prefer.

Actually, I lied. An old band mate of mine keeps trying to put together a band unsuccessfully around here. I gave up when I realized that he and I were going at it alone after we crossed paths about four times while trying to form bands.

A pair of 12's will afford you less overall volume than a pair of 210's will, generally speaking. There's more cone area on the side of the ten's. Consider how much amp you'll need though. To play in a band like that around here, I'd need a 410 or 2 15's to begin with. I upgraded to an 810 for one of my last band's practices.

PS - You can't generalize "warmth," "depth," or "roundness" just on speaker size alone. Put an Acme Low B2 up against my Mesa Diesel 115. The Mesa will be more of what people think of 10's and the Acme more like what people think of 15's. It's all in the design...

Sorry on sounding strange, any advice on what i could clarify?

And I was crazy stoked, literally jumping up and down, when i bought my LMT head (thus joining the club), but the longer I play it the more i want something different, someone i was playing with described it as "sterile" and that's kind of how I've grown to hear MB stuff. I still love the head, just looking for something more "me", you know?

Any technical guys reading wanna give some advice on a 410 vs 212? It'd be greatly appreciated.

The 212 is 3db less sensitive than the 410 or two 210's is/are. That would be a dealbreaker for me. You'd need to double the speaker area (add another 212) to get equal performance out per watt of input power. I'd go with the 410. It will be louder and go farther before giving out than the 212 will, even if you pushed them with equal power. That said, the 410 is 98 lbs versus the 70 lb 212. Box sizes are the same... So y'know. Up to you.

Ok yeah, I’m on a new hunt myself - and so far I’m leaning towards a GB Shuttle 6.0 paired with Barefaced Super Fifteen. I wish you the best and hope you find your new rig.

I'd vote for two single 15's ( one with the coax) and a micro head of your choice. I've had the markbass 2x10 combo and was not satisfied with it. I found it lacking when playing with a powerful drummer or even moderately loud guitars.

A little stack like this should cover your needs nicely.

Otherwise just get a TH500 to pair with your D10BX-D. That would be another killer combo.

I've had a few BE D10BX-Ds and they rocked, but the 2x single 15s give more room filling sound and could offer a moduluar option for you.

Shoot. If I'd have known that, I'd have had two of those a long time ago. That's just right for my 100w tube amp habit and injured shoulder. I know I like BE cabs. Mine are a little too big/heavy.

The only Genz product I've had any time to mess with was a GBE 750, and it seemed pretty cool, i was playing through an Ampeg 810, but I only got a couple minutes. Havent been able to get my hands on anything again to give it some more time? Any good descriptions of the tone I'd get out of one of their heads or cabs?
