Small, Light, Cheap Rig? Ideas?

Hi Guys,

I know it is to ask for too much but I want something to replace my dead Ashdown Electric Blue 180w Combo. I need something that at least does the same...will keep playing the same kind of places and there was only a couple of times that I needed more power...

I don't mind going to a maximum of £1000 but would like it to be really small and light.

I am thinking about the markbass traveler 102p cam...will this do much better than the 12" from the ashdown or being it 2x10" the low end will be missing a lot? I imagine it will be much better than the 12" I have but I'm afraid that size might be important in here.

Regarding the Head I have been thinking about the Little Giant 1000w from Ashdown but that would only send around 300w to a 8ohm 102p and I don't know if it will be enough...still I believe it would be louder that my 180w combo.

I now saw the new Orange Terror Bass and I think I will give the Ashdown a miss If I can get this one on time for next gig... It is a 500w and can both give 500w in 8ohms or 4ohms...

I understand that in the future the idea will be to add another 102p cab or a 151 but for know I still have the speaker from my dead ashdown combo that I could combine with the 102p in the bigger gigs...

Am I thinking write or I will be disappointed by realizing that a markbass 102 alone with one of this heads won't be that much better than my £250 combo???? From £250 to £1000 it is a big difference and I would like to see some of that in the sound...

Any ideas of something as light and small as this set up that would do better or be cheaper???

It just switched off during the last song...(at least it found the right time to do it) :)

It wouldn't switch on at all...today I took the head out of the box and it looks like it burned...dead... :)

Fair enough...I have it for two year as my only amp and have been gigging a lot...at least once a week always without plugging it to a PA...PA just for vocals... Its been great...but I want to move on to something more professional...the problem is that the room in the car I had for my combo is the room I have for the new system and that is why I'm thinking of just using a 2x10 from Markbass...so when I get a van I can get another cab to put together with the 2x10. :)

What about going for the MarkBass Little Mark III and getting an Ampeg B410HE???

At the moment I'm between the Orange Terror Bass and the LMIII...What do you guys think?

If I buy the Orange one I can get the Marbass 102p cab. If I get the LMIII I will have to go for the Ampeg cab...

Any suggestion? Did anyone use a LM with an ampeg 410?

What? That Ampeg does not fit to anything you decribed, it is a 4x10" 62lbs cab.

The thing is, Ashdown and Markbass sound completely different to my ears (experience with Markbass LM III + HF series 2x10" cab and Ashdown 2x10" MAG combo). While the Ashdown was pretty much what I want a bass amp to sound, Markbass was something I could never use in my band.

If you basically liked how your combo sounded, you can check out Ashdown combos from MAG (EVO II) and ABM (EVO III) series (both have 1x15" and 2x10" versions, I like 2x10" much more and I think when you try them out you see that 2x10" might have a better low end than 1x15" not vice versa).

Thanks Feral for the links...I'm looking in to it but it is still not easy to find them...by the way...love the Overwater basses...maybe one day... :)

Sten - Thanks for you help...Yes, the Ampeg is a bit out of size and weight but I was thinking that maybe I should invest more on the head (LMIII) and to have to cope with a bit more weight on the cab (cheaper). :)

I'm still confused... there is not much where to try stuff here in South Wales(UK)...

Why do you say that the MarkBass was something you could never use in your band???

By the way, I see you are using an Ampeg 410...but the SVT...what do you think of it? For me the SVT is out of the price if I buy the LMIII...but would the B410HE do it for me???

I play Soul stuff...not only but mainly. :)

Hi Guys...thanks for all the help...just went to a shop and went crazy...
I tried the Little Mark III with a MB 102p and had to ignore the cheap factor...but it is small and light... Not cheap dough. :)

one day will buy the 15" as well to add but for now the 2x10 will do the job and very well.

Lesson to learn...of you want small and light forget the cheap...the three do not work well together.

Thanks to all talkbass members. I read a lot around here and it helped a lot.

Well if I did manage to upload the picture properly here is my rig. When I want the really small one I just use the markbass part of it...Very Small and Light.

Just kiding...thanks rpsands...

I'm really happy with the MarkBass...have been playing just with it on the vertical (and no, the logo can't be turned around) with the markbass on top of it (it stands nicelly on top of the cab on both vertical and horizontal).

I'm playing in a Soul band and we don't tend to be very loud and so there is no Marshall problem...but I don't think there would be...the rig is pretty loud...

With my bass I can't turn the gain more than 9oclock and so I have to play with the volume and don't even need to go half way on small venues...

Yes, I would like to had a 15" (markbass 105p if possible) to the rig but I already spent more than what I make with it. :) For know I will try to use the ashdown speaker from my old combo... Do you reckon it will blow as it is supposed to be played with a 180W amp and the LMIII sends 500w if plugged to two 8ohm speakers?

I will try it live tonight in a reasonable size bar... (Bar Cuba in Cardiff, UK) at home it sounded good and didn't blow...let's see tonight. :)
